Georgia has fired coach Mark Richt, according to various reports.

ESPN.com’s Mark Schlabach was the first to report the move.

Georgia will hold a press conference on Monday.

Richt was 145-51 in 15 seasons with the Bulldogs, including a 9-3 record this year. The Bulldogs defeated Georgia Tech on Saturday to end the regular season.

Mark Richt is a good coach, with a good offensive mind. But you have to beat Alabama in the SEC. And you can't lose as randomly as he did.

I have to give UGA credit, I didn't think they would do it. Although there was a noticeable contingent of boosters that were sick of Richt.

I can't stand UGA, so I would always take solace in the fact that Richt was good to be out-coached about 3 times a year.

He sort of reminded me of Pasqualoni, although Richt's teams were just better coached. But come game time, he could never get it done. The big difference for UGA is that unlike Pasqualoni they have one of the best talent pools to draw from. Especially since Georgia Tech has very high scoring standards and runs a flexbone offense.

In another analogy, Richt reminds me of the same issues that Garrett will face. The UGA defense was just never reliable. They had some great talent on defense and they would have some great years overall on defense, but usually in the big game when you needed the defense to be there or if you get in a game where the inferior opponent is giving you a run for your money, the defense wasn't there to squash that.

Wish the Longhorns would dump Sorry Charlie and go after him.

Some radio rumors here recently is that some alums want to make another run at Saban for upwards of 12-15 million...

That would be a huge move, yet highly unlikely. But if there's one University that could pull it off, it would be Texas with their deep pockets.

I hate to say it, but smart move by UGA (yes, pun was contemplated...then fully intended).

Although knowing UGA fans, they probably think because somebody has the last name 'Smart' that they are actually 'Smart.' Inbreeding tends to produce that type of thinking.

Anyway, UGA badly needed a consistent defense. Smart has ties to the area, so he can transition into recruiting seamlessly and he's a Saban coach and that might be worth getting a victory or two against Alabama.

Of course, I would love it if it fell flat on their face.

15 years is too long for any coach that isn't winning titles.

That doesn't seem to be a fit at ALL...

He's from Boca Raton and played at Miami (backup to Jim Kelly). He's been a great recruiter and the talent is certainly there in Florida.

Plus, the U has been looking out for high character coaches given their past. Seems like a great fit to me.

If they are really planning on changing the culture, then yes... but they've tried before...
