Georgia running back Todd Gurley's season, and possibly his college career, is over.

Gurley tore the ACL in his left knee during Georgia's win over Auburn on Saturday, the school confirmed on Sunday. Gurley went down on a carry in the fourth quarter and didn't return. It was a non-contact injury. Gurley planted his foot and tumbled to the ground in pain.

The game against Auburn was Gurley's first game back after serving a four-game suspension for accepting money for signing autographs. Gurley reportedly took over $3,000 to sign memorabilia, a violation of NCAA rules.

The fact that he was nicked up prior to this and this was a non contact injury are concerning. Good chance he is therein round 2. Round 3 would be a no brainer.

Horrible injury for him as that will affect his draft status. Wouldn't be surprised to see him come back for another year now.

ACL injuries can be weird. Sometimes they aren't the result of some big hit or some big guy rolling up on the player's leg. Sometimes it is minimal contact and an awkard step that rips the ligament. It can be a flukey injury.

Of the many ACL tears I've seen (thankfully not experienced), it seemed like the guys that had a clean tear, ACL only, that came back the strongest and would get back to 100%. Meanwhile, the guys who had other damage, cartilage and other ligament tears, struggled to ever get back to 100%. Anyway, that's what I've seen from witnessing a lot firsthand.
On a related note, Marcus Lattimore (the dynamic RB from South Carolina who had the gruesome knee injury his final college year) got drafted in the mid rounds when the 49ers took a flyer that he could get back to 100%. He just retired because, in his words…."Unfortunately, getting my knee fully back to the level the NFL demands has proven to be insurmountable." So, while I'd be tempted to grab someone as dynamic as Gurley with a 3rd round pick or so (were he still available)…great caution is warranted. A draft bust due to injury is just as bad as a draft bust due to poor selection. Either way, we get no production from the draft pick.

Yeah, I've seen guys act like they just got their leg blown off from an ACL tear and others walk around just fine. I remember when Flozell tore his ACL he basically walked off the field without a limp, just walking a little slower than usual. Then they came back with it being an ACL tear and I could not believe it.

I played on a torn ACL for two games in high school. With just an over the counter brace. I was too stupid to know I'd blown it out. It doesn't hurt. You get a bit of swelling, and just don't have any lateral support when you need it. Forward-backward support is normal, though, so it's kind of a weird sensation.

The guys that freak out are probably reacting to the popping of the ligament because it definitely feels weird, but there really isn't much pain. The pain comes if you crack your patella or if you get bone-on-bone conditions from cartilage tears. That can be pretty painful, and I know that from experience, too.

Re: Gurley...does this make him a candidate for a later-round stash for the Cowboys, now?

I've heard that the guys that react the most are the ones that also tear their MCL at the same time. Apparently an MCL injury is pretty painful even though at times not as serious of an injury.

gurley will still be a first round pick if its just an acl tear(and i dont mean to diminish the seriousness of the injury at all)

Where'd you have Gurley going in the first place? I'd be shocked if he's taken in the first round with a blown ACL. I thought he was a mid/late first in the first place.

RBs have a hard time sniffing the 1st round lately. I doubt Gurley may not even be a 2nd or 3rd rd pick any more. He may not even play next year. It takes about a year to heal and be able to make cuts and have confidence in the knee. Sf took a flyer on some RB and he is done, never played a down. Granted, his injury was a lot worse.

If he is available in the 2nd round, the Cowboys have to strongly consider him, especially if the Boys are unsure of their ability to re-sign Murray. I'd hate to lose Murray but getting a big talented guy like Gurley in the 2nd to take over would be steal.

he is a top 10 talent imo, not necessarily top 10 pick but i still think he will go late 1.

I'll take him in the 2nd round he'd be perfect for our offense with our line and the way he runs... hopefully a full recovery for Gurley (see Adrian Peterson)
