We have acquired 2 guys today with a combined age of like 70!!!

we actually got younger at both spots.

i think the team realizes it needs long term solutions but you can't go into next year planning on starting a draftee you dont have yet so we needed proven bodies first.

i suspect ilb and qb are both very much on the draft board.

Here is a post from Atlanta newspaper I got from ESPN:

News: Brooking and the Falcons were unable to strike a deal by Friday, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports. He becomes an unrestricted free agent for the first time in his 11-year career.

Spin: Brooking was the sole remaining player from the Falcons' 1998 Super Bowl roster. He became the team's starting linebacker the season after, making five Pro Bowl rosters and leading the team in tackles for eight consecutive years. He still has a few more good years left in him now that he'll likely remain as a weak-side linebacker to finish off his career, but that all depends on the type of defensive scheme he falls into with his next team.

exactly

this is a weak draft for ILB, so it's not like we're going to find the starter there for the next 10 years, alot of these guys available are platoon players

Brookings is just insurance

dude...*LOTS* of people are younger than Brad Johnson.

Brad Johnson is SOO old, his first pass went to Abraham Lincoln during some down time at Gettysburg!

Gurode, Davis, and Colombo are in their prime.

If the Cowboys can get rid of Barbie and get something back, get rid of Ellis, and resign Burnett or draft a young, fast ILB to play with Brooking, this could be a good deal. I will wait to see the numbers.

Brooking had two monster years in Phillips' defense.

And we got rid of a 32-year-old cornerback.

We will replace him with Springs who will be 34 March 11th

I'm pretty sure now they're trying to stay in a compensatory pick cycle. So they'll try to avoid signing players who's contracts expire and look at players who were cut. That = elderly players, usually. Any FAs lost can then become comp picks if they qualify.

So, keeping in that method of acquiring FAs, Shawn Springs could be signed without affecting comp picks.

this brooking signing reminds me of the scott case signing a few years back. good leader, has some credibility in the locker room and should be able to step in at the WLB spot whereas Zach Thomas was playing out of position. We still got Carpenter in case Brooking doesn't pan out. Although I'm afraid he's going to spend yet another year as a back up.

The Kitna aquisition I don't like too much. I never liked him before and I feel he adds very little in case Romo goes down. Just because Brad Johnson was horrendous it doesnt make Kitna a good QB. He might be better than Brad Johnson, but so was Bollinger and that doesnt buy him squat.

Kitna was a good pickup imo. Brooking, welll, maybe not so much - but who else we got? Kitna is a good character dude as well as a solid backup. He threw well when he was coached by Martz. Yeah, yeah, Martz is sort of a whacko. But a good coach none the less. Kitna thrived and all was well - again, sorta.

EASY smoovb...I live in MIchigan and the Lions fans couldn't stand Kitna. He was poison in the locker room. If he wasn't having a come to Jesus moment, he was throwing a teammate under the bus. Not a good guy to introduce to an already toxic lockerroom. JJ just being JJ sadly...........

I did not know that. Well, perhaps I was a bit hasty. Thanks for the scoop.

No kidding. The name of this thread is pretty miss leading. Heck, by signing Kitna and Brookings, while cutting Johnson, we probably got younger.

:eek::
