Getting younger at WR

I'm all for bringing in guys like Javon Walker or even looking at Moss, but we have to get younger. We have to draft a guy we expect to be THE man. I'm not talking about a couple of camp fodder guys or "major" projects. I'm talking about a ligitimate first or second round guy to grow up with Romo, Witten, and Barber. I'm 95% sure Austin, Hurd, and Stanback are not the answers as a future #1 WR on this team. I guess there's always that 5% chance I suppose.

Do you think signing a guy like Javon Walker will dwindle our chances of drafting a guy with one of our first 3 picks (1st, 1st, 2nd)?

I do and frankly it's why I am soooo against Walker. He is getting older, an injury risk and I think his addition will all but eliminate a wideout to be drafted in the first three rounds. Moss I would accept, he is far better than Walker and less injury prone, but I don't think there is anyway he ends up in Dallas.

I wish we would just draft Limas Sweed or Malcolm Kelley but I have a feeling we will be disappointed..

Sign Walker and Bell to incentive laden contracts.

Draft any combo of

WR - Kelly, Hardy, Sweed, Devin Thomas

CB - Cromartie, Mckelvin, Jenkins, Cason, Talib

RB - Rice, Charles, Forte, Choice, Johnson, Jones, Slaton

Give me any combo of those 3 in the draft and the rest is gravy.

I wish you were the GM this upcoming April.

I'm hoping we have a shot at Malcolm Kelly. I think the fact that he did not participate in the combine gives us slim hope.

Unless we add a quality WR who can be our #2WR this year our offense will be in trouble should TO get hurt. There were occasions when our opponents' defense took TO out of the game leaving us to depend on Witten, Crayton, Hurd & Austin. We don't know what Stanbach can do on the field & Glenn may never be able contribute at the same level as before despite Jerry's beliefs, etc. Also if opposing defenses can to Romo, we gotta keep Witten in to protect Romo limiting our offense even further.

I see need to add a #2 WR as a 2-prong effort. Draft a Kelly (probably long gone), Hardy, Thomas or Sweed with our 28th picks. Unfortunately, most rookie WRs don't do much their first year cause there too much too learn.
(BTW: I'd use our 22nd pick on top CB if one still there when we draft. Wouldn't draft a RB til 2nd round--a guy like Ray Rice.)

That's why I'd like to sign Jevon Walker but only if he totally healthy/comes very cheap. He would come in & make big-time contribution immediately. I don't see his acquisition as hindering our rookie draft WR's development at all. But I also admit I see Walker as probably a 1 year player for us cause he'll want to move on to a team willing give him big bucks as their #1 WR while he knows we don't have the money to keep him & TO is the #1 with our rookie WR becoming the #2 eventually.

I don't think it does. WRs usually take a year or two to make the transition from college to the NFL so we need a guy opposite Owens until whoever we draft is ready to step in.

We should have drafted a guy last year or even the year before but this year will do. We should probably draft another one next year too.

What you're saying definitely makes sense. I was very disappointed in Crayton in the playoff game. I think a lot of people would say that if he made the 2-3 critical plays he missed, we would have moved on to the next round of the playoffs. Others will say forgive the guy - it was one bad game.

With that said, my fear is that signing a Javon Walker will make Dallas look away from WRs the first day of the draft. I'm with you, I really want both (a dependable FA and a first or second RND guy at WR).

I hope you're right :) It feels like I've been waiting for a first day WR to be drafted for 10 years now. I guess it's why I'm so worried about all this Walker talk. Jerry tends to address things in his own ways and then gets overly complacent.

I threw a fit last year for Dwayne Bowe and even went on rants about how he'd be as good if not better than Calvin Johnson. After the season Bowe had in 2007, I feel even sicker that Jerry did not get him. We'd not even be thinking WR of the future at this point.

We have to get a guy this year that we expect will be our future #1 guy at the position - Malcolm Kelly is my Dwayne Bowe of 2008. Moving up a few spots to get him makes a whole lot more sense than moving to a top 5 for D. Mac.

Sorry I inadvertently hit post button before I was through with my thoughts.

Finally some have said we still developing Hurd & Austin. But let's be real. Hurd lacks speed & at best will be a #3WR & we've already got Crayton for that. Austin barely made the team last year cause he dropped lot of passes--something he continues to do but he does have speed. This will be their 3rd TC so both better give it their best shot. We'll also see what Stanbach can do and he could easily surpass both Hurd/Austin on the depth charters if he looks ready.

I can easily see our WRs as: TO, Walker, Crayton, Stanbach, first round WR & Hurd/Austin fighting for 6th slot. If Glenn shows he can really help, we keep him cause of cap hit we'd take otherwise which means Hurd & Austin get cut or traded for a 7th rounder.

There is always a window a team has to win a SB. If we don't add a #2 WR who can make a big difference this season (along with a few other needs on the team), we may be throwing away another big chance to win it all. I don't want to wait & hope that Glenn comes back healthy nor do I believe Hurd/Austin are keys to our winning the SB. That's why I want Kelly or Hardy or Thomas or Sweed along with Javon Walker. Walker will be for this year and the rookie will be for all the years down the road including some day replacing TO. I'm tired of waiting for the Cowboys to finally draft the WR we need.

We have a...

#1 QB of the future
#1 RB of the future
#1 TE of the future

What we don't have is a #1 WR of the future to grow up with Romo and the gang. That's what we need.

You could say we don't have a young #1 LT of the future I suppose but that's so hard to know. I haven't seen enough snaps from Free, Marten, or McQuistan to say yes or no. I have seen enough from Austin and Hurd to know they are major long shots to being THE guy.

I agree. We have needed to draft a WR for several years. Now is the time.

Agreed ..... time to stop being cheap and get a guy who can be our number one when T.O. hangs it up.
