Much like the iconic Ebenezer Scrooge in Charles Dickens' beloved Christmas classic, Jerry Jones is destined to be visited by a ghost of his past when the Cowboys and Chargers square off next Sunday.
The ghost will appear in the form of the well-traveled Norv Turner.
As we all know, when Jones was seeking a new head coach to replace the departing Bill Parcells, he spurned Turner in favor of Wade Phillips. The San Diego Chargers quickly pounced on Jerry's castoff, and hired Turner as their head coach
Since that time, Turner's Chargers have twice made the playoffs and twice won playoff games. They also tend to be at their best during the Christmas season (Dickens would be proud!).
For the sake of not piling on (as we're prone to do following losses such as these), we'll just say that Wade Phillips has not been so fortunate.
A loss to the Chargers would be devastating to the psyche of the Cowboys organization and its fans, in my opinion. It would send the Cowboys spiraling into their 13th consecutive December swoon. And, because it occurred at the hands of the man whom Jerry shunned, it would raise even more questions about his abilities as GM.
Hopefully, after Jerry's visit with this ghost from his past -- win or lose -- he'll have learned a little more about what it requires to build a team capable of winning in December and beyond.
If Scrooge can learn, perhaps Jerry can.
