What does the Mike mean

The Mike is the Middle Linebacker. In a 3-4 that position can vary. The Mike is pretty much the QB spy, and watch out for dump offs over the middle to RB's. He can also blitz up the middle. In other words, he is like the qb of the defense, and the wild card in what you think the defensive assignments are. In a 3-4(mostly) and other defensive schemes, the Mike can vary. Traditionally with linebackers the Sam(strongside LB) is your run stuffer along with your strong safety, the Will(Weakside Linebacker) should have better pass coverage, and is more in tune with your free safety. The Mike(MILB) and his play is a pretty good determination of what the defense plans to do.

Just to clarify, in a 3-4 the defense is always trying to hide who that 4th DL is going to be. Knowing who the Mike is lets the offense know what side of the field will get whatever coverage.

My wife thought Romo new his real name... had to explain why quarterbacks identify the mikes.... I think she still believes his name is Mike :).

That's adorable. "Mike, Sam, Will, meet Tony. Tony, meet Mike, Sam, and Will."

I love when you can hear the quarterback make his calls. I remember a couple years ago in Tampa on the NFL channel you could hear everything Romo said. I was surprised. He told Witten once "Heads Up" and threw the ball to him. He told Ogletree "I just might throw it to you" and did. I did hear Romo once yesterday say "double move".

If you played football, you know "Sam" and "Will" would refer to each other by those names even off the field, regardless of their actual names, at least at my school they did
