The Giants knew Chargers fans were going to make life difficult for Eli Manning in San Diego Sunday night. But they weren't happy that the Chargers organization tried to make things tough for him, too.
Some members of the Giants organization were annoyed at what they considered to be "bush league" tactics employed by the Chargers, apparently designed to inflame a crowd that was already fired up by Manning's first trip to San Diego after he advised the team not to take him in the 2004 draft and was eventually traded to the Giants. They appeared to do their best to keep the atmosphere in a riotous state all night, and did little to prevent the quarterback from being pelted with debris as he left the field after the game.
Among the many unnecessary "extras" the Chargers added to the game was having their PA announcer tell the 65,000 fans that Manning was the Giants' starting quarterback - not just once, but every time the Giants' offense took the field. They also posted an "Eli's stats" graphic on the scoreboard several times listing the amount of times he was sacked, hurried or hit.
The numbers were next to a photo that some speculated had been doctored to make Manning look somewhat drunk.
Besides that, the Giants didn't appreciate the number of anti-Manning signs - some quite nasty - that were allowed to be displayed inside the stadium, or the obscene T-shirts that were available for sale in the parking lot. For the most part they were happy with the security around the bench and near the tunnel. But it wasn't enough to prevent Manning from getting hit with a shower of cups and paper as he left the field after the game.
