When Giants defensive tackle Jay Alford found out he tore ligaments in his knee two weeks ago, the team held out hope he could still avoid season-ending surgery.

That hope extinguished Friday, when coach Tom Coughlin announced that Alford will miss the rest of the season. The valuable backup suffered a partially torn ACL and the team apparently gave up hope the injury could heal without surgery.

While losing Alford is a blow to the team's excellent defensive line depth, fellow defensive tackles Rocky Bernard and Chris Canty have been returning to health after training camp injuries.

Big, big loss. Especially with the other guys hurting + Canty having to learn a new position.

Eh, they lost a far superior player in Osi last year (coupled with Strahan's retirement) and still took the division. This hurts, but they're hardly crippled.

They also had alot more talent on the offensive side of the ball last year.

I havent been sold on the Giants all offseason.

Which is why in the "bold predictions" thread, I predicted them to finish last in the division. They dont scare me. At all.

+1

I've said this entire offseason that they'll go 7-9 and fight the Skins for the cellar of the East. Not sure though now with all the injuries Philly has. Their defense looks poor at this point, but they always start slow.

Thing about Osi, folks give him waaaaaay too much credit in my mind. He had one break-out game against a back-up offensive lineman and now he's the best thing since sliced bread? Sorry, but from the games I've watch on NFL Network replays he still plays the run only on an average level. He used to have better LBers behind him to cover his rear but we'll see how that works out this year.

Hey alright I got another member on here as crazy as I am with the predictions.

Osi is a good player, and while he is average in run support, he is a dynamic pass rusher, regardless of his breakout game was against a backup.

The player that scares me the most in that defense for this upcoming season is Kenny Phillips. The dude has skills, and with that front 7 he's going to have a great job back there.

I think Osi is overrated, but he's still a good DE.

He gives Flo fits.

I think they are still a solid team. They play with confidence and don't really shoot themselves in the foot. I think they will be tough.

I'm with you on Phillips, but I don't feel it with the entire front 7. I'll give their defensive line credit, but their LB'ers have some holes that any good pass catching TE and/or RB can easily exploit. Luckily for New Jersey, there isn't anyone like that on any team in the East. :laugh2:

Really? His zero sacks in 3 games versus the Cowboys in 07 can attest to that. I actually remember Sporano saying we only had to worry about doubling Strahan because Flo could handle him single handedly.

I think it was Manning's first game as a starter vs us.

Osi treated Flo like a turnstyle that night.

I'll concede he's played better vs Osi.....but the memory of that night will stay with me.
