Football is a dangerous sport and every Sunday brings physical risk, but once again the sport is facing a serious health hazard away from the field.

NFL Network reported Sunday that New York Giants tight end Daniel Fells is fighting a case of MRSA so severe that he might need his foot amputated. And that may not be the worst of it, as there is concern that the illness may have advanced to his bone and his bloodstream. Fells has already undergone a reported five surgeries, and may need more in the effort to stave off the infection.

After a week of pain and fever following a cortisone shot, Fells' wife took him to the emergency room on Oct. 2, where MRSA was found in his injured ankle. Had he waited longer, the infection would have had more time to spread.

Read this a few days ago, that is something scary especially for the other players. JPP should be glad he only had his fingers blown off, he could have had MRSA on top of it.

How many alarm bells are needed? The Browns went through similar issues only a few years ago.

So every NFL team must know about this and how to prevent it or at the least clean up so it is not there.

This should have triggered alarm bells a LONG time ago. Like when Brandon Noble's career was ended by a staph infection from unsanitary conditions in the Washington lockerroom. But no...the outrage is better placed at Greg Hardy saying he was going to come out 'guns blazing.'

This poor guy. I pray he recovers fully and has a great life. It's awful to hear about things like this.

As if it's not bad enough that it's threatening his career but it's also threatening his life.

I got a staph infection near my ankle about 7 years ago. That is horrible pain. Wish the guy a full and speedy recovery.

Giants should be fined for this.

I would doubt the Giants did the injection , maybe the team Dr. So he would be responsible for prepping the inj site. Staff or mirsa live in nasal passages of Dr's and medical personnel everywhere . Anytime I have an injection or surgery I ask the Dr for a negative nasal culture for everyone that will be there. They have to be checked often and if they won't let me see it I find another Dr.
