GIANTS MULL WRIGHT MOVE

By PAUL SCHWARTZ

April 11, 2007 -- In the never-ending quest to bolster their backup quarterback position behind Eli Manning, the Giants this week will meet with Anthony Wright, who will make a visit to Giants Stadium to speak with the offensive coaching staff.

Wright, 31, is arguably the last proven quarterback remaining on the market. (Over Bledsoe?)

The nine-year veteran spent last season with the Bengals and enjoyed his best success in Baltimore, where he started seven games in 2003 and seven more in 2005. In his career, Wright has completed 55.4 percent of his passes along with 20 touchdowns and 25 interceptions.

As recently as 2005, Wright had surgery to repair a torn right labrum in his shoulder, but sources say he is completely healthy and should have no trouble passing a physical.

The Broncos showed interest in Wright but instead opted to sign Patrick Ramsey. The Falcons also flirted with Wright but went with Joey Harrington and the Panthers bypassed Wright for David Carr.

Ever since assuming the starting job midway through his 2004 rookie season, Manning has at the very least been durable, starting all 39 regular season games and two playoff games. His backups, Jared Lorenzen and Tim Hasselbeck, have not thrown a regular-season pass in the past two seasons and the team has made no secret of seeking upgrades. In the past, the Giants considered signing Jay Fiedler as a backup option.

Yesterday, the Giants signed kicker Marc Hickok from UConn and punter Cory Ohnesorge from Occidental College in Los Angeles. With the decision not to re-sign veteran Jay Feely, the Giants for now are left at place-kicker with first-year kicker Josh Huston from Ohio State and Hickok on the roster.

Kinda says a great deal about what the league thinks of Bledsoe, doesn't it. For the life of me, I will never understand that whole Bledsoe thing with Bill.

Why not? He's been Mauled by every Dlineman in the league. Why shouldn't the Giants get a shot??

With all the QBs that came through here during the Dave Campo era, who would have thunk it that Anthony Wright was the one to come out with the longest career?

I think Bledsoe is ready to retire. The only thing left is the formal announcement.

He's got enough money and can't get a starting job so why bother?

Now he can spend more time with his family.

Can't buy time.

I would tend to agree with you... but... I think its still early.... AND / OR ... when season starts someone could go down... then Drew will be looked at a starter that could come in... instead of said teams backup QB.... who knows...

Better QB in their careers: Bledsoe easily

Better QB right now: neither

Better backup QB or suited to be a backup QB: Wright

Some guys are made to be starters and some are made to be backups. Wright is willing to accept the role of backup QB. Bledsoe is not. That is a big step in becoming a good backup. Being prepared to play even though you don't get many reps in practice. At this point, I don't trust Bledsoe at QB with the majority of snaps in practice. There is no way I would trust him with less than 10% of the practice snaps.

I remember that game against Oakland when Quincy pulled a hammy. Anthony Wright threw a bomb to Joey Galloway on the following play.

Campo Era...good times.

It's official Anthony Wright is a Giant. He signed a 2 year contract.

Let's hope Eli stays healthy. ;)
