I think the Giants are actually hoping a team like Washington or another team reaches for him. I think they probably want the two 1s more then they want the cap hit.
I think that goes to the old adage 'wish in one hand and **** in the other and see which one fills up first.'
I don't see anyone giving up two firsts for him, in addition to making an offer the Giants wouldn't want to match. That's a whole lot of resources to throw at one position.
They don't actually have to give up two first round picks. This would give the Giants leverage to trade him. They could work out a deal where they trade for less then that. Of course, a team would have to be willing to pick up the contract and give up picks but those picks, in a trade scenario might not be two first rounders.
That's true. I guess from the Giants perspective it's better than just losing him to free agency. The worst thing that could happen for them in that scenario is they end up paying him 11 million for the year. As long as they have the cap space and he's productive it's not the worst move they could make.
I still like the idea of them tying up 11 million in one DE though, especially when he hasn't exactly been killing us.
When was the last time someone gave up 2 1st rounders to "steal" a player? I know someone mentioned Joey Galloway in another thread (cringe) but I didn't know if that was the most recent.
Honest question: Has there ever been a situation where someone took another team's franchise player, gave up the 2 1st rounders and it turned out to be a pretty good idea?
I have to think if a team was willing to give up 2 firsts, they'd be doing it for Justin Houston before JPP (and I'm down wit JPP).
So if they transition tag him they have to pay him 12 million this year, all guaranteed. Since they only have 18 million in cap space that's a lot of money to tie up in one guy. But I'm sure they can move money around to make it more comfortable, and it's still better than the 15 million the franchise tag would cost them.
