Let the Miles Austin contract comparisons ensue.

http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2013/07/08/cruz-gets-15-6-million-guarantees-in-new-deal/

According to Jay Glazer of FOX Sports, the new contract extension agreed to by Giants wide receiver Victor Cruz is worth $43 million for the five new years of the deal, on top of the $2.987 million he was scheduled to make this year as a restricted free agent.

The deal also reportedly includes $15.6 million in guarantees, according to Glazer.

While a strong showing for Cruz, six years at roughly $46 million falls well short of what Cruz was hoping for early in the process.

Except Dallas wants to actually keep Dez. Maybe not the same feeling in NY with Hakeem Nicks.

Not really. How Nicks contract is handled is how JJ will approach Dez.
Those were my thoughts as well

Cruz is a WR in our division who has shown to be a difference maker. The contract is also the most recent comparison for a top-tier WR. So the contract gives us a baseline to work off of. IMO, the consensus is that Dez is a better WR and has a much higher upside than Cruz, but the contract still provides ball park numbers.

As far as Nicks goes, it's a tough call. Nicks has had some injury problems and one additional year in the NFL. I also think there's some animosity between Nicks and the Giants. Bottom line is that Dez's contract could very easily get done before anything happens with Nicks.

Based on what? He has a year left on a team with limited cap space and he's coming off a subpar season. He has no leverage.

Recent performance?

2628 yards in the past two seasons (1314 yards per), 19 TDs (9.5 per), and 168 receptions (84 receptions per) are pretty darn good numbers -- especially for guy playing the slot. His 15.6 average yards per reception is also exemplary for a slot receiver.

What does this have to with Giants not wanting to re-sign Nicks?

Those numbers are for Cruz. He was talking about Nicks.

Nicks is going to be looking to prove he is worthy of a big contract. I think he is going to have a big year this coming season making it harder for the Giants to sign him. Of course, if he gets injured again, he will be elsewhere in 2014.

I will take a good year from Nicks in a heartbeat. Let his stock rise. I don't care. He has never played a whole 16 game season with us and is injury prone. Let him give us 1 good year and be somebody else's problem in 2014.

I think Giants can bring in a healthier #1 receiver in 2014 to play along with Cruz, Randle and Jernigan

I don't think you could be more off base. At a MINIMUM we should be looking at what Mike Wallace got.
