Free (6-6 1/4, 324) was my 77th-ranked player. He came to Northern Illinois as a tight end and has been a four-year starter (more than 45 games). There were some questions about his strength, but I saw tape of him in 2005 where he knocked down Michigan DT Alan Branch twice. This is a very athletic guy; he teammates called him "Doug Freak."

With Free, Marten, and McQ, I think we have really sured up the OL for the future. Also, I believe we will find our C backup in Berger or Proctor. If things pan out with these picks we may have the best OL since our mention one of the largest lines in team history.

Our O-line ceretainly seems to feel better now than it has in a long long time.

Let's hope Free and Marten > Peterman and Jacobs.

After several years of being put on the backburner, the team really focused on upgrading the offensive line. I don't have any regrets about the Martens and Free selections.

Next April we can concentrate on"Juice" picks like RB and WR day 1.
:hammer:

You can't draft glamour picks at EVERY position in EVERY round in EVERY draft. It just doesn't happen.

FYI, Gil Brandt also said that Nick Polk was his #1 rated place-kicker in the draft

It's also quite possible we drafted the best 3-4 pass rusher in the draft.

it's possible

we got 2 players who were top 5 at their position according to Mike Mayock, Marten was the 4th best OT according to him, and Spencer was like the 4th or 5th best DE/OLB

26DallasAnthony SpencerDEPurduePat Kirwan's Analysis I really like this player. In the new Cowboys 3-4 defense, they really are a four-man rush team and occasionally a five-man rush team. Spencer had 21 sacks in college and 11 forced fumbles, which might be the best in the whole draft. The ripple effect of this selection is Bobby Carpenter probably moving inside. When I interviewed Spencer, I was shocked at how strong he is. Try these numbers on for size -- 525 pounds on the bench press, 610 pounds on the squat, 365 pounds power clean. This guy is NFL-ready now.

No both of these tackles are tough, hard working guys with lot of desire. Apparently both of them can also play OG. In fact Marten played at LG for 2 years at BC before he moved over to LT this past year. Will be interesting to see how McQuistan compares against Marten & Free. Of course McQuistan was more of a project then either of these two will be but he's also participating in our weight conditioning program so he's probably stronger then either of them at this point. Gee when was the last time the Cowboys had 3 backup OTs with promise.

Agreed. This is the best and deepest our OL has been in many years.
