I know kind of a stupid thing to discuss maybe. But after an interesting moment i had over Christmas this year i gotta ask.

Anybody that can remember how important was Gil Brandt to the Dallas Cowboys.

I was at my fiances Dads Christmas party on Sunday. His wifes Parents were there (They always make fun of me for being a Dallas Cowboys fan in Wisconsin) and as im leaving they happen to say "you know we have a cousin that used to work with the cowboys. We dont know him very well but his name Gilley Br....". They couldnt think of the rest of his name. I finsihed it and said Gil Brandt? and they said yea thats it. They are Packer fans so they dont know the significance of Gil Brandt to the Dallas cowboys. And i got me to thinking man like he was huge to the dallas cowboys (im too young to remember). The rest of the night i just couldnt believe that they realy couldnt think of this guys name. Because i swear we had a Mt Rushmore Dallas Cowboysys style thread here before and some of you put Gil Brandt on it.

I know random but i just cant get over how cool it is and how they dont even realize how big of a name Gil Brandt really is.

Gil joined the Cowboys at the request of Tex Schramm. Gil is the very first guy to create himself as a Draft icon. He sent Schramm letters about prospects when he was with the Rams and occasionally Schramm would give the guy a try.

So when he was made GM of the Cowboys he got hold of Brandt and signed him to an exclusive services contract. For 29 years he and Schramm and Landry were the Cowboys brain trust and at times Brandt was a genius, and like all draft icons, at times he flopped.

He introduced computer held information to the Draft process as he literally kept files on hundreds of players. He wasn't limited to football. He looked at Basketball for Cornell Green and Rayfield Wright among others. They also drafted Pat Riley from the University of Kentucky before he went on to fame as an NBA Coach.

He was also in some ways Schramm's henchman. If Schramm didn't want to deal with something, he assigned it Brandt. This was especially true of contract negotiations for free agents. Brandt had a really slick pair of alligator shoes and quite often the players would want a pair. He'd agree to make it part of the signing bonus and quite often they would sign the contracts. Then they'd get their bonus and the cost of the shoes was deducted.

Brandt is still one of the most active minds in football scouting that there has ever been. In his prime he may have been the best one ever. Team scouting networks exist because he made them work.
