Scouts gather around one S.C. State prospect
Posted: April 3rd, 2010 | Gil Brandt | Tags: 2010 Pro Days, Phillip Adams, South Carolina State

There may have been 15 South Carolina State prospects at the school’s pro day workout on March 31, but the scouts on hand from 15 NFL teams were all there to see Phillip Adams. The 5-foot, 10-inch, 192-pound cornerback ran a 4.53-second and 4.52-second 40-yard-dash, 34.5-inch vertical leap, 10-4 broad jump, 4.35-second short shuttle, a 7.17-second three-cone drill and participated in position drills.

Great Scott! Northern Iowa prospect makes impression
Posted: April 3rd, 2010 | Gil Brandt | Tags: 2010 Pro Days, Austin Howard, James Ruffin, Quentin Scott, University of Northern Iowa

Free safety Quentin Scott impressed scouts from eight teams at Northern Iowa’s pro day on March 31st. Scott (6-3 7/8, 224) worked out as both a defensive back and a wide receiver and put together a really good workout. He ran a 4.40-second and 4.45-second 40-yard dash, had a 35-inch vertical leap, 10-1 broad jump, 4.18-second short shuttle, 6.88-second three-cone drill and completed 13 bench press repetitions at 225 pounds. His arms were measured at 34 5/8 inches.

Ten of Scott’s teammates and two players from small area schools also worked out indoors on Mondo track.

Other notable prospects:

Defensive end James Ruffin (6-3 1/2, 265) ran 4.85 and 4.86 in the 40, had a 33-inch vertical leap, 9-1 broad jump, 4.59-second short shuttle and a 7.60 three-cone drill. Ruffin worked out in March at University of Minnesota’s pro day and kept the number of bench press repetitions (26) from that workout.

Offensive lineman Austin Howard (6-7 3/8, 333) ran 5.42 and 5.40 in the 40, had a 30.5-inch vertical leap, 9-1 broad jump, 4.62 short shuttle, 8.10 three-cone drill and had 19 bench press reps. His arms measured in at 34 inches.

Well-traveled Western Illinois players chase NFL dream
Posted: April 3rd, 2010 | Gil Brandt | Tags: Joseph Wielgat, Patrick Stoudamire, Western Illinois

Sometimes, if the scouts aren’t willing to come to your pro day, you have to bring pro day to the scouts. That’s exactly what nine athletes from Western Illinois University did when they traveled about 175 miles east to the campus of Northwestern University to work out indoors on FieldTurf for talent evaluators from 20 teams.

The three-hour road trip was well worth it for a couple of prospects:

Cornerback Patrick Stoudamire (5-10 1/2, 206) ran 4.52 and 4.55 in the 40-yard dash, had a 31-inch vertical leap, a 9-11 broad jump, 4.14 short shuttle, 7.00 three-cone drill and completed 11 bench press repetitions at 225 pounds. Stoudamire came to Western Illinois to play basketball but made the switch to football after his freshman year.

The other NFL hopeful who impressed scouts never even played football at the school. Joseph Wielgat (6-6 1/8, 243) played rugby at Western Illinois and worked out as a tight end at the pro day. He ran 4.69 and 4.66 in the 40-yard dash.

Small-school prospect shines at Penn’s pro day
Posted: April 3rd, 2010 | Gil Brandt | Tags: A.J. Jackson, Jake Lewko, The California University of Pennsylvania, University of Pennsylvania

A.J. Jackson, a wide receiver from California University of Pennsylvania, stole the show at the University of Pennsylvania’s pro day on March 31st.

Jackson (6-1 1/4, 236) did a good job in drills catching passes from a San Francisco 49ers scout and ran the 40-yard dash in 4.75-seconds against the wind and 4.68 with the wind, had a 35-inch vertical leap, 10-foot broad jump, 4.33-second short shuttle, 7.11 three-cone drill and completed 17 bench press repetitions at 225 pounds.

Jackson, along with six players from small local schools and three from Penn, were evaluated by scouts from eight teams outdoors on FieldTurf.

Another notable prospect:

Penn linebacker/special teamer Jake Lewko (6-0 3/4 232) ran 4.81 against the wind and 4.78 with the wind in the 40, had a 30.5-inch vertical leap, a 9-5 broad jump, a 4.37 short shuttle, 7.26 three-cone drill, completed 22 bench press reps and did a position workout.

Oklahoma State’s Cox holds private workout for scouts
Posted: April 3rd, 2010 | Gil Brandt | Tags: Oklahoma State, Perrish Cox

Oklahoma State CB Perrish Cox held a private workout for NFL scouts on March 30 in Waco, Texas, at Waco High School.

Cox didn’t run drills at Oklahoma State’s pro day on March 10 because he wasn’t invited. He was told by school officials that he wasn’t welcome to work out in Stillwater after he was suspended from the Cotton Bowl for violating team rules.

Cox (5-11 1/2, 191) worked out on FieldTurf in ideal conditions — except for the 10-15 mph wind. He ran a 4.20-second short shuttle, a 6.82 three-cone drill and ran a 4.54-second 40-yard dash with the wind and 4.63-seconds against the wind. He also did position drills.

SMU prospects try to impress NFL scouts

There was a time when SMU produced NFL talent with regularity. While that has waned in recent years, it appears the NFL is taking a closer look again fresh off the university’s first bowl game in 25 years.

Seventeen teams were represented at SMU’s pro day, including Kansas City Chiefs special teams coach Steve Hoffman, Cleveland Browns WR coach George McDonald and Eagles RB coach Ted Williams.

There were 10 prospects at the workout, five from SMU and a combination of five from small schools and former players. It took place outdoors on FieldTurf with a pretty good wind.

Notable prospects:

WR Emmanuel Sanders (5-foot-10 3/4, 181 pounds) stood on his 40-yard dash times from the NFL Scouting Combine. He posted a 39-inch vertical jump and a 10-foot, 10-inch broad jumped. Sanders looked really good in receiving drills and is also an option in the return game.

RB Shawnbrey McNeal (5-8 3/4, 189) ran the 40 in 4.70 seconds against the wind and 4.48 with the wind. He posted a 33-inch vertical, a 4.50-second short shuttle and a 7.24-second three-cone drill. McNeal caught the ball well on a straight line, but had a hard time when he had to make moves.

Texas State QB Bradley George (6-5 1/4, 228) was the passer. He didn’t run after running at Texas State. He posted a 31-inch vertical, a 9-7 broad jump, a 4.26 short shuttle and a 7.08 three-cone drill.

K-State’s Mastrud yet to run 40, but works out at last
Posted: April 2nd, 2010 | Gil Brandt | Tags: 2010 Pro Days, Jeron Mastrud, Kansas State

Kansas State TE Jeron Mastrud (6-foot-5 1/4, 253 pounds) is recovered from the right foot surgery that kept him from working out at the NFL Scouting Combine, but he isn’t quite ready to run the 40-yard dash.

He did do all of the other drills, however, and posted some decent numbers. He had a 32 1/2-inch vertical jump, an 8-foot, 10-inch broad jump, a 4.59-second short shuttle, a 7.42-second three-cone drill and did 13 bench press repetitions at 225 pounds.

Several teams representatives were there to watch Mastrud perform, including the Eagles and Giants tight end coaches. Another Kansas State player, as well as a player from Washburn, also worked out.
