Guice demonstrates blazing speed at workout
Posted: Pro Days | NFL.com Staff | Tags: Drew Willy, Dudley Guice, Lou West

The official Northwestern Louisiana State Pro Day is on March 19, but one scout showed up on Tuesday, so the school held an impromptu workout.

Wide receiver Dudley Guice put up some impressive numbers on the outdoor FieldTurf track. He checked in at 6-foot-2 1/2, 209 pounds and ran a 4.40- and a 4.43-second 40-yard dash. That time would have ranked him among the fastest participants at last month’s combine. He also had a 39-inch vertical jump, 10-foot, 5-inch broad jump, a 4.01-second short shuttle, a 6.61-second three-cone drill and 12 bench-press reps. It is also noteworthy that he has 34-inch arms — a good measurement for a wideout. Here are other schools that held pro days this week:

North Texas — Twelve NFL teams were represented, watching five players work out. They ran on FieldTurf in the football stadium and did the jumps in the weight room.
Wide receiver Casey Fitzgerald was the most notable player. He measured 5-9 5/8, 188 pounds and ran the 40 in a wind-aided 4.65 seconds; 4.74 seconds against the wind. He had a 36-inch vertical jump; a 9-foot, 10-inch long jump; and a 7.06-second cone drill.

Northeast Oklahoma: Wide receiver Jarrett Byers was the only player to work out and he did so outdoors on FieldTurf. He measured 5-10 1/2, 191 pounds and ran 4.42 seconds in the 40 with the wind, and 4.47 against the wind. He did the short shuttle in 4.09 seconds, the three-cone drill in 6.80 seconds, and had 14 bench press reps.

Ouachita Baptist College: The claim to fame for this Arkansas school is Cliff Harris. I signed him as an undrafted free agent in 1970 and he wound up being a six-time Pro Bowl selection in his 10-year career with the Cowboys. That was the last time this small school had a prospect — until now. Two teams came to see WR Julius Pruitt, who put up similarly fast times to Guice, running the 40 in 4.42 and 4.40 seconds. He had a 31 1/2-inch vertical; a 9-foot, 4-inch broad jump; a 4.36-second short shuttle; and a 7.19-second three-cone drill. His shuttle and cone times were likely affected by a lack of training in those particular drills.

Henderson State’s Lou West, an offensive lineman, also worked out here. He ran a 5.53 in the 40; had a 26-inch vertical; an 8-foot, 6-inch broad jump; a 5.06-second short shuttle; an 8.64-second cone; and 26 bench-press lifts.

Colgate: Seven teams came to watch seven players work out from four area schools. The prospects ran indoors on FieldTurf. The most intriguing prospects were:
OL Nick Hennessey came in at 6-5 3/4, 291 pounds. He ran a 5.33 and 5.25 in the 40; had a 30-inch vertical jump; a 9-foot, 4-inch broad jump; a 4.51 short shuttle; and a 7.31 three-cone drill. He also put up 21 bench press reps. Bills OL coach Sean Kugler is planning to work him out next week.

RB Jordan Scott checked in at 5-9 3/4, 198 pounds. He posted times of 4.82 and 4.85 in the 40; had a 34-inch vertical; a 9-foot, 2-inch broad jump; a 4.42 short shuttle; a 7.22 three-cone drill; and had 14 lifts in the bench press.

OL Steve Jonas came in at 6-4, 307 pounds. He ran the 40 in 5.35 seconds twice; had a 28 1/2-inch vertical jump; an 8-foot-, 2-inch broad jump; a 4.67 short shuttle; a 7.53 three-cone drill; and 24 lifts in the bench press.

QB Jason Boltus from Hardwick College stood on his combine numbers and did individual drills.

Alabama-Birmingham: Ten teams attended. After the workout the school hosted a big barbecue, making all the scouts happy. The prospects ran outdoors on FieldTurf. Kicker Swayze Waters measured in at 5-11 5/8, 178 pounds. He had a 29-inch vertical; a 9-foot, 4-inch broad jump; and six bench-press reps. The other notable prospect, free safety Will Dunbar, did not show up to the workout.
Buffalo: Nine prospects worked out for seven teams indoors on FieldTurf.
QB Drew Willy was at the combine and stood on all of his times, except the short shuttle. He ran that in 4.51 seconds. He also did position drills.

Ernest Jackson, a wide receiver, checked in at 6-2 1/8, 215 pounds. He ran the 40 in 4.52 and 4.53 seconds, had a 31-inch vertical jump, a 10-foot broad jump, a 4.54 short shuttle, a 7.44 cone drill, and put up 18 bench press reps.
