For me, the best I've ever seen was the beautiful Sean Taylor, followed very closely by Ed Reed.

Sean Taylor. Damn. Beast. RIP, Sean.
Loved watching Sean Taylor play. I can never get enough of this

really and truly, he had one great season and that was the season he passed away. 2004-2006 he really was not even close to the caliber of player Ed Reed was. 2007 he was likely on his way to a DPOY campaign, but Ed Reed even season by season was the best safety of this generation.

Unfortunately Taylor only got to play 4 seasons. We don't know if he would have continued to get better or not. I think Roy William's first 4 seasons were equal to and possibly greater than Taylor's 4 seasons. What happened to him?

"Like" for Ed Reed (and I noted him), but Sean was destined for Canton.

Sorry brudda, I wholeheartedly disagree. I'm also infatuated with Sean, so you won't convince me otherwise.

He was murdered by some thugs over an ATV.

And Roy wasn't in the same stratosphere as Taylor. Once horse collaring was outlawed, Williams became far less of a force.

Taylor was 215 lbs of pure explosive dynamite that didn't need a horse collar.

I know he was murdered, which is why I said it was unfortunate he only got to play 4 seasons.

Taylor in 4 seasons
238 tackles
12 interceptions
8 forced fumbles
2 sacks

Williams first 4 seasons
285 tackles
12 interceptions
9 forced fumbles
6.5 sacks

Looks like they were in the same level of atmosphere to me. I don't think either is one of the best ever. Taylor because his life and career were cut short and Williams just stopped playing at a high level.

Williams used a horse collar, Sean didn't. Sean possessed innate instincts to go with probably the hardest hitting force in the league.

He is my best ever that I have seen, as I stated in my original post in this thread. Williams' decline puts him out of Taylor's stratosphere, for me. We saw Williams full career. He never approached the transcendent-potential that Taylor was headed for, imo, Josephus.

Perhaps if Williams go-to move wasn't banned from the league, he would have remained elite.

The numbers you cited, especially the tackles and sacks, benefited greatly from the horse collar. Sucks it was outlawed, but it is what it is.

Huh? What the hell does that even mean in regards to my post?

I can't help myself replying to you. But it's always fun. And you nary reply.

Whatcha got, Mr. 666?

What makes my opinion blind? You gonna state your opinion as fact? Tread lightly, lest I quote a post of yours from just the other day obsconding those that do so, bubba.

If I read your post wrong, as it is (probably intentionally) vague, enlighten me.

I don't know. Two Super Bowl appearances, one win, and 2 semi-annual All-Pros. They're certainly at the top this past decade. Integral to a Legion of Boom defense that ranks amongst the best ever.

Kam and Thomas are studs, Dex. If they keep it up, they're probably headed to the Hall. Thomas, especially. Even with the Hall's reluctance to enshrine Safeties.

I agree about Taylor, but disagree why Roy became less of a force.

The loss of Woodson and the additional responsibilities of coverage for Roy did him in. Went from being able to play to his strengths to asked to drop back into coverage.
I mean we went from Woodson to Lynn Scott, Tony Dixon, Rod Davis etc... all subpar starting safeties.

Also, I think he just lost that passion in order to continue to be that great type of safety and stay in tip top NFL shape.
I remember those highlight clips (JDSmith?) used to make. Roy was able to be in the right spot to absolutely destroy the receiver or be in prime position for the pick. The Roy of 2002-2003 was different from the Roy from 2004+
While he still had turnovers in 2004, that was when the RW rule was eventually created after he injured 3 players IIRC.
But him being a physical force started to decline as he had to play catch up and yank from behind.

Fair enough, but you must admit, John, that the horse collar rule deeply affected his game, as well?

You even mention the RW rule. :)

I agree about the passion, too. He lost his fire. Shame, really.

Sean Taylor, despite the fewer INTs, was better at coverage, imo. And maybe, like you said, John, that had to do with the revolving door at S once Woody left.
