i don't pay much attention to Mayock but he made a interesting move with having Gilmore now his #2 CB. I like Gilmore and I think he is the better player and have been saying this for a while.
But why do so many other have Kirkpatrick rated higher than Gilmore. looking at the stats of both players playing in the SEC. Gilmore is far and away better.
Kirkptrick also played on a better team with a better pass rush which should help him out. Alot of people like kirkpatrick more physical style but Gilmore had far more tackles and is just as physical.

Gilmore
6'0" 190 pounds 4.40 40;
40 games with 8 INTs
in 2009 ranked fifth on the team with 56 tackles including 39 solo stops … had 6.0 tackles for loss including three sacks … had one interception and eight pass breakups
in 2010 led the team with 79 tackles, including 6.0 for loss and 3.0 sacks … responsible for four opponent turnovers including three interceptions
in 2011 recorded 46 tackles during the 2011 campaign while leading the team with four interceptions

kirkpatrick

in 2009 finished with eight tackles
in 2010 finished with 53 tackles on the season to rank fourth on the team in his first year as a starter … had seven pass breakups, a forced fumble, a fumble recovery and made three interceptions that he returned for 30 yards … had four tackles for loss
in 2011 has 26 tackles with 23 solo stops while defenses also has a nine pass breakups … returned a blocked field goal 55 yards for a touchdown … has two forced fumbles and two tackles for loss

Definitely Gilmore has the higher ceiling. Special teamer too.

I would rather trade back for Gilmore than picking Kirkpatrick at 14.

Co signed. Try hard as I might, I just dont see Kirkpatrick at 14.

I've known Gilmore since HS and I've watched many of his games at SC. He has the abilities but was a little bit of a disappointment. I don't know if its fair or not but many thought he played below his abilities. I think that's too harsh. He should be able to play well. He's not real physical but I think he can do the job. I think it would be a better choice to trade down if you want him.

They were really talking up Gilmore on Path to the Draft tonight?...but tey ALL loved DeCastro:)

Kirkpatrick might end up #1 on my anti-pet cat list.

From what I see, he loses a lot of speed when he has to turn and run. That equals toasted CB in the NFL. He has to get grabby to stay in the picture. He also dances after literally every bleepin' thing he does.

I like Gilmore so much more, but Steve Spurrier "coached" players worry me. They all seem to be fools' gold.

Mayock likes Gilmore over Kirkpatrick. I think of all the draft "experts", he's the most reliable.

I'm not a fan of Kirkpatrick and have not seen Gilmore play, so if the Cowboys select either, I will just cross my fingers and hope they got it right.

I prefer Gilmore to Kirkpatrick too.

Gilmore's got intangibles and ball skills in his favour.

He's not the best tackler, but that's simply a matter of technique not desire. He's definitely got the want-to to tackle.

Gilmore will take a couple seasons to get where he needs to be, but he has all the raw tools. As an SC alumni, I can tell you that Gilmore can gamble sometimes and gets burned. He will lose some receivers and has done so in key moments, but I think as he plays and learns, he will overcome that issue. Physically, he has everything you want. He can play man, zone, press or off. He will tackle, although he can improve in that area.

Kirkpatrick is better in zone coverages right now. He clicks and closes well. In man coverage, he has to keep contact with the receiver and rub him down the field because if he loses him, he is in trouble. He does not have that elite speed to close down the field. Just my opinion.

I don't even understand any talk of a CB in the 1st round.

It seems that you'd want a mid 1st round pick to come and start right away.
The Cowboys have two starting corners and a good slot corner in Scandrick.
We need some more young corners, but I just don't the why we would spend a 1st rounder unless they for sure planned to let Jenkins walk after this year.

We can find some CBs a little later in the draft for depth and development.

I guess if they rank one way higher than any other player at the time the 14th pick is on the clock (and they can't get fair trade) then maybe they pull the trigger. Then and only then though.

I would rate Gimore higher than Kirkpatrick.

I'm not sure that Kirkpatrick is better than Trumaine Johnson.

I agree. The ABQ duo has been lobbying for Gilmore for quite some time now. Got laughed at back then...

The problem I see with Gilmore is that he tends to try and look into the backfield a little too much. He tries too hard to make a big play and sometimes gets burned for it. Don't get me wrong, I like Gilmore better then Kirkpatrick because I believe that this is something that can be coached up and corrected. I am simply stating what I have seen of his game. I like the guy. I like him better then any other CB prospect in this draft that I have seen.

A lot of these Alabama players are overrated. I've said it before .. it reminds me of the dominant Miami Hurricane defenses of the early 2000's where the entire unit was so dominant that everyone looked great.

There will be some Vince Wilforks, DJ Williams and Sean Taylors on this Alabama defense. There's going to be a lot of William Josephs, Mike Rumphs, Kelly Jennings and Jerome McDougals too.

I've been leaning toward Gilmore over Kirkpatrick of late. Mostly because I thought we should take care of another position of need at 14 than CB, and then maybe trade up as needed to get SG -- back up into the latter 1st Round or top of the 2nd Round. Now, with Mayock claiming Gilmore is his #2 CB pick in the Draft, that idea doesn't appear to have much chance of success.

Mayock said he's further convinced Stephon Gilmore is the 2nd best CB in the Draft, today, after attending South Carolina's Pro Day. I posted PFT.com's blog about it. A snippet:

"Two of the 15 best players in this year’s NFL draft may have come from South Carolina, where outside linebacker Melvin Ingram and cornerback Stephon Gilmore both impressed at today’s Pro Day."
