This was my big worry about Diggs going down. Not that you can't use the current CB depth to have at least a league average starter fill in, but now you get the ripple effect down the rest of the defense. Gilmore stats to move around move and that safety help over the top has to go to Blands side, leaving Gilmore a bit more vulnerable. Not only that but now you're playing more deep safety looks taking help away from run support which is where some of our safeties really thrive.
It's not a death sentence, this is still a really good unit despite a bad game. Not sure what DQ will do, but what i would like to see is what Belichick did for so many years on defense. Use your best CB (Gillmore) to take away the #2 receiver and constantly double up a teams #1. In order to do that though you really need the front 7 to tighten up on the run defense. If you're getting gashed constantly by outside runs and counter plays like we saw yesterday you become forced to leave your DBs on islands.
