and Jerrah mercifully stepped down to make that possible. It's all in fun, but then again most of us are just as qualified to make the colossal blunders he does anyway...

Here's my plan:

Free agents: 2 and they are both whoppers: Nicks and Grubbs. Both maulers, both pro bowl caliber and both instantly solve the guard problem for the next 5 years...........we just don't have good success drafting interior Olinemen: sign these 2 guys, and we won't regret it

Draft: well, this is where it gets dicey as I'm no draft guru. I know the secondary sucks...no question about it, but I really think we can upgrade it later in the draft so I'm going to take the best Dtackle available here to help that depleted secondary in first round: Still, Poe, Brockers, Worthy would all be good picks

2nd round: we need a center guys, and it can't wait any more so I'll go with Jones out of Georgia and/or Brewster out of Ohio State or Konz from Wisconsin if he's healthy.

3rd round: best cornerback available

4th round: best ILB available

5th round: best safety available

6th round: best def. end available

7th round: another linebacker....

.........that's what I got: what say YOU?

FA: A really good CB and a really good guard.

1st round - OLB or D.lineman

2nd round - Center

3rd round - G or S

Resign: Fiametta, Robinson, Spencer

Sign: Grubbs, Carr, Red Bryant, Stephen Tulloch/Dan Connor

Draft:
1. DeCastro
2. Boykin
3. Markelle Martin
4. Shea McLellin

This is a damn good list with a few changes - Nicks over Grubbs. T. Thomas over Carr. Love the Dan Connor mention. Bryant would add some beef in the middle of the D-Line.

That would be a sweet draft as well. Our Ol would be immediately one of the leagues best - possibly three pro-blowers - Smith, Nicks and DeCastro.... sick..

I agree that Nicks is better, but I think Grubbs is going to get a bunch less money. I don't think that Nicks is a whole 1.5 or so mil per year better than Grubbs.

As for Thomas over Car...I get it. In all honesty I don't know the corners apart from one another well enough, I just happen to like Carr. But I'd be happy with Thomas, Finnegan, Carr, Grimes or one of those top guys.

Yeah Future, Nicks is not 1.5 mil a year better with the holes this team has to fill. I would not be against Carr either. Grimes is solid. Finnegan is tough as nails but I don't think he has the wheels to keep up with elite receivers - I could be wrong. It wouldn't be the first time.

My kind of thread......

Probably off a little, but looking over Adam's cap thread and assuming certain obvious releases, I think we'll have around 30 million to fill something like 18 roster spots.

I know this is a fantasy since all the FAs won't be availible.

Free Agency:

OG Nicks.............(8yrs 72mil SB 24mil) 4mil in 2012 cap dollars
CB Finnegan........(6yrs 48mil SB 18mil) 4mil in 2012 cap dollars
SOLB Williams......(7yrs 63mil SB 21mil) 4mil in 2012 cap dollars
FS Best Availible...(???????????) Maybe 3mil in 2012 cap dollars
FB Fiametta..........(4yrs 16mil SB 4mil) 2mil in 2012 cap dollas
WR Robinson.........(4yrs 18mil SB 5mil) 2mil in 2012 cap dollars

So that should leave us 7-11mil in 2012 cap dollars.

Now we trade down from 14 to 20 and get an extra 3rd, 4th and 5th.
Then we trade down from 20 to 30 and a 2nd.

Now we have these draft picks:
1st(20)-OC
2nd-DE
2nd-QB
3rd-ILB
3rd-OG
4th-CB
4th-OT
5th-TE
5th-WR
6th-RB
7th-S

Actually Finnegan ran a 4.33 :laugh2:

The more I think about it the more I like Finnegan. I like his toughness and the edge he plays with, and he's a good corner to boot. The reason I prefer Carr is that I think Finnegan will want more money.

1st round - OLB or D.lineman

2nd round - Center

3rd round - G or S

FA targets: Grubbs, Nicks, Harwick, Davis, Campbell, Avril, Abraham, Jets or NO NT, Williams, Henderson, Spikes, Grimes, Rodgers, Finnegan, Trufant, Barber, Porter, Thomas, Landry, Griffin

I go after one of Grubbs or Nicks, consider Harwick, go hard after Campbell then Avril, consider a NT, take a hard look at Spikes, take one or two of the CBs, and look real hard at Griffin or Landry. I'd hope to land an OG, DE, ILB preferably Hendersn or Spikes, then at least one CB and possibly a S although I consider that an outside chance and depending on who they may actually land in FA. I'd put 3 FAs as tops and more likely two top FAs and one or two one year contracts.

I'd target NT, LB, DE, OLB, CB, and S in the draft with the understanding if a top quality player falls then you take him regardless of position esp OL. I'd try and spend my top four picks on DB, DL, and LB preferably OLB, DE, and CB. Wouldn't pass up a 'sure fire' OL though nor a S.

Definitely a CB or G. Then you draft the one you didn't get. If money left over then I would go NT or safety.

I forgot OUR free agents: definately re-sign Fiametta and Robinson and PASS on Spencer. I just don't trust him, not after he was quoted as saying he didn't go all out all the time last season. Let this guy go....:bang2:

I'm going to go to the Stephen Jones' school of prudency. Obviously, I will check on Carl Nicks. However, I suspect his price is going to skyrocket, so I will turn to Grubbs. If his price is off the roof, I'd pass on both. As much as I hate doing that, I'd hate it even more if I end up over-overpaying for either. Teams are going to overpay in free agency, that's the nature of the beast, but the key is NOT to over-overpay...

With that in mind, and assuming that Nicks and Grubbs have priced themselves out of my range, this are the top 3 guards I'd go after in free agency:

1) Chad Rinehart, 6'5, 323 lbs, 27 years old ( Bills )
2) Jeremy Zuttah, 6'4, 310 lbs, 26 years old ( Bucs )
3) Chilo Rachal, 6'3, 323 lbs, 26 years old ( 49ers )

Not well known names, not " headline " names, but those are the type of players who are still very young, they're big, they're talented, they're hungry, and they're going to be alot cheaper than either Nicks or Grubbs. I wouldn't mind signing Rinehart to a nice, middle class contract, and pair him up with DeCastro or Glenn inside. The line would instantly be better, younger, and very, very cap friendly with the highest paid player being probably Doug Free.

I'd, then, turn my attention to CB. I, too, follow the same philosophy as above. I'm also looking for two big, relatively fast, young corners who are not too expensive. This would be my top 5:

1) Terrell Thomas, 6'0, 190 lbs, 27 years old ( Giants )
2) Greg Toler, 6'0, 190lbs, 27 years old ( Cardinals )
3) Corey Graham, 6'0, 200 lbs, 27 years old ( Bears )
4) Antwaun Molden, 6'1, 200 lbs, 27 years old ( Patriots )
5) Keenan Lewis, 6'0, 210 lbs, 26 years old ( Steelers )

Thomas and Toler are coming off knee injuries, which means they should be cheaper than usual. As long as they check out health wise, both would be solid signings.

Having addressed the CB position, I'd then look for Safeties. Here, depending on the talent available, I might go over the middle class range if the right guy becomes available, ie: Tyvon Branch from Oakland. Not crazy, but I'd be willing to spend some coin if necessary. These other players would be in my sight:

1) Michael Griffin, 6'0, 200 lbs, 27 years old ( Titans )
2) Reggie Smith, 6'1, 200 lbs, 25 years old ( 49ers )
3) Courtney Greene, 6'0, 210 lbs, 25 years old ( Jaguars )
4) C.J. Spillman, 6'0, 200 lbs, 25 years old ( 49ers )
5) Craig Steltz, 6'1, 210 bls, 25 years old ( Bears )

I didn't mention LaRon Landry because, frankly, his injuries scare me to death. I also doubt very much that Branch is going to be available.

After them, I'd turn my attention to 3-4 DE. Now here I won't go too overboard because I hear the Cowboys are bringing back Hatcher and Spears. Since Ratt is going to be moving to DE and I also want to give Clifton Geathers a long look in training camp, I would mainly want to target young free agents with potential who's contract have expired and are hungry to prove themselves. These guys would be my targets:

1) Sammie Lee Hill, 6'4, 330 lbs, 25 years old ( Lions ) for both DE and NT
2) Nick Hayden, 6'4, 290 lbs, 25 years old ( Bengals )
3) Desmond Bryant, 6'5, 290 lbs, 25 years old ( Raiders )
4) Letroy Guion, 6'4, 300 lbs, 24 years old ( Vikings )
5) Leger Douzable, 6'4, 290 lbs, 26 years old ( Jaguars )

Then I start filling out the roster with cheaper guys at other positions:

OT: Anthony Collins, 6'5 315 lbs, 26 years old ( Bengals )
TE: Zach Potter, 6'7, 280 lbs, 26 years old ( Jaguars ) former DE at Nebraska
OLB: Aaron Maybin, 6'3, 230 lbs, 23 years old ( Jets )
ILB: Jovan Belcher, 6'2, 230 lbs, 24 years old ( Chiefs )

Overall, even though there's plenty of cap space and money available, I'd have a conservative approach when it comes to FA. I would prefer to keep that cap room and money available for when a transcendent talent becomes available or to sign our own players.

i like RW's plan above but

sometimes you have to over-pay for quality

rather 'over-pay' for quality and put that position to rest than bring in players that will need to be paid but will not play up to what we need

at some positions we need immediate starters that are young and will be long term deals for us

with this in mind, here is my plan:

FA:

OG: Nicks or grubbs in that order
CB: Carr or Terrell thomas or Finnegan in that order
NT/DE: Sammie Lee Hill or Red Bryant in that order
FS: Griffin

Draft:

Rd1: Melvin Ingram (OLB)
Rd2: Dontari Poe (NT)
Rd 3: Brandon Boykin (CB, PR/KR)
Rd 4: Best OC available (Brewster or OC from Houston)
Rd 5+: BPA

think of a defense with Rat and Bryant at DE and Poe in the middle (NT) with Ware and Ingram rushing off the edge, lee and carter in the middle and Carr and jenkins at CB and griffin and sensa at safety

that is a pretty damn good defense IMO

Ok,
I bring back
  • Fiametta
  • Robinson
  • Bennett
  • Ask spender to give me the chance to match
Bring in
  • CB T Thomas
  • CB Aaron Ross
  • FS Michael Griffin or Reggie Nelson
  • Robert Mathis - I talk to him, not likely, but he's the pressure player available
  • OG Grubbs

excellent post and light years ahead of trying to name very specific guys or every top free agent that ever lived.

we can target certain positions then set a price limit and go after guy in that range.

we can target a handful of positions at a draft slot but not just one position much less one guy.

I like RW's thought process as well, except I think both Hill and Rinehart are RFA's and especially Hill is unlikely to be let go.

Cowboys FA's re-signed-Robinson, Fiametta, Holland

FA's

G/C-Dan Connolly- Something about giving 80 million to a guy whose had weight issues kind of scares me with Nicks.
DC is a versatile guard/center who comes from a winning program and probably cheap.

Corner-Terrelle Thomas-Would have been one of the top two corners available had he not tore his knee. Tough as nails and actually knows how to turn his head on a deep ball.

OLB-Spencer is a good player, but something about his attitude grates on me. Ahmad Brooks would be my first choice, but I hardly think the 49ers let him go. With that I would go Marcus Benard who had eight sacks the year prior but broke his arm early last season which pooched his season.

NT-Red Bryant...massive and relieves some of Ratliff's duties in the middle...also versatile enough to play end.

S-I think the best safety in this class by a country mile is Tyvon Branch, size, speed, young and getting better.

Wr/SP-Roscoe Parrish He can return kicks and will come cheap.

Draft

1.Michael Brockers, DE--Improving the front seven is what I would be determined to accomplish. I believe Ingram wont make it past the Bills and Brockers might be scooped by the Panthers, but a kid with this combination of size, athletic ability and motor is very rare.

2.Brandon Washington, G-Decastro is the best OG prospect, but I still am not convinced taking one at #14 is the right move unless both Brockers/Ingram are gone. This guy was very good in 2010 when he played guard and he is nasty.

3.Shea McClellin olb-Told you I want to improve the front seven. Non-stop motor and can play linebacker.

4.Coryell Judie cb-Tough kid who has a nose for the football.

5.Jerry Franklin ILB-Nice measurables from a good program who could develop into a starter

6.Chandler Harnish QB-Has a nice skill set, perfect as a developmental QB

7.Joe Looney G-Developmental guard.

Brief synopsis......Sign Evan Mathis and Red Bryant while retaining Spencer, Elam and Robinson. Cut Newman. Draft best available CB with 1st pick, best OG in the 2nd, best pass rushing OLB in the 3rd, and athletic TE in the 4th. Fill out the roster with the rest of the picks.

Qb- Romo
Rb- Murray/Jones
Fb- Fiametta
Wr- Dez, Austin, Robinson
Te- Witten/Rookie
LT- Smith
Lg- Mathis
C- Costa
RG- Rookie
RT- Free

LE- Rat
NT- Bryant
RE- Lissemore/Hatcher
OLB- Ware
MLB- Lee
MLB- Carter
