Gimmicky Cowboys Defense

First lemme say I love our Defensive personnel, especially the youngans - I'm excited.

BUT - we are a bag o trick D - we still CANNOT get to the QB without a blitz - double stunt - Zone blitz - Safety shoot - etc etc...This will ALWAYS comeback to bite you ALWAYS.
Until I see guys like Greg Ellis(God Forbid) beat players off the ball 1 on 1 - I will have my doubs about how well we can do this season. You simply cannot blitz every down.
When you go to the 3-4(these days) - except in Pittsburgh's case, you're basically admitting you have to disguise your blitzers b/c you do not have the manpower to play 4-3.

No matter what you have to be excited about Ware, although Wallace was carrying that ball like a cup of tea.

Thanx for confirming his stupidity ...we've never played the 3-4 - but he wouldn't know that b/c he became a Cowboys fan the same year he got AOL - 1996.

The thing is, if you go back and watch the game again, you will see that for the most part, on the one good drive the Hawks had we basically ran a base 3-4 with no blitzer. That will very rarely happen in a real game.

Even if we only bring one guy...it is effectively a blitz because the OL has to read where he is coming from. So I would chill a little over the defense.

Other than that drive the Hawks did dick all night long.

It's pretty rare that a Defense doesn't disguise their blitzing player/players. Also, the biggest benefit to the 3-4 is the flexibility (aka the bag o tricks) it allows. On any play a coordinator can drop 8 legitimate players (not DLmen) into coverage or rush any player.

We did get a lot of push and pressure from just the line from the 2nd team too. I didn't see that from the first team though. I don't recall Ellis' or Glover's name being called at all.

I couldn't have said it better myself. After all do you think we drafted Ware to drop back into pass coverage all day? Which I was impressed with by the way.

In a 3-4 D sending the OLB after the QB is not considered a blitz

How many teams can actually generate pressure solely with the front four. Other than maybe the Panthers and the Colts, it seems like most teams generate a rush sending linebackers or a saftey. The Patriots and Eagles being examples of teams that dont get much pressure from the D-Line but but cause havok sending linebackers.

Exactly - in a 3-4 you disguise the free man or men - depending....it's a Gimmick! like I said!! There's a reason it's a rarity these days...you get burned big time. And it's easier to find 4 DL than 4 Speed oriented LB's. With 2 of the 4 being preferably big and fast.
