I like smith only for the experience and guidance he could bring to the QB room. But I think he wants to keep playing.
I’d love to add Jones
The DT spot is our weakest link to me
Smith is gonna hold out hope for a chance to start so it’s gonna be a waiting game I think with him

Now you are dreaming. Stephen isn't going to entertain any of that. These are good additions but Stephen wants thrifty acquisitions that they can sign cheap on a one-year prove-it deal. These guys are going to want more than that. I like all of them, I just don't think Stephen will do it. I think we are done in FA. What we have now is what we will have going into the draft.MM said in his PC this week, that the team has been in contact with a few veteran QB's, I believe Alex Smith is on top of our wish list. He was taken #1 in the draft by the 49ers when MM was their OC.
Already explained in length why KJ Wright would be a terrific signing by the team. Can play all linebacker positions, knows the scheme/coach and is considered a great leader. He also has the ability to stay on the field in the nickel.
Daquan Jones is what he is, a true run, massive NT. He is the type who can anchor and occupy multiple blockers. He would improve our run defense immediately.
Think with the age of these three, none with break the bank. The longer these players remain available, their prices will start to come down. Sign 2 of the 3 and we are ready to go drafting.
You are totally forgetting we have a draft coming to fill more holes. We were never going to get this team in a position to compete just through free agency. It's not the goal.100%. He is #1 on my wishlist by a long shot.
If we get him and at least one more top-notch outside CB, I would feel like this D was ready to compete.
DLAW - Jones - Gallimore- Gregory is not a bad DL.
If Gallimore does not take a step up, start Urban at the 3-tech on run downs and, at very least, we would be hard as heck to run against.

I think MM likes to have a veteran backup in the QB room. Don't see Smith getting any starting opportunities out there when he was just replaced. McCoy has done a good job as a backup for a long time. Think at some point they are going to fill this need and won't go into next season with an unproven QB behind Dak.Backup QB is something we may need to wait a while on. There are guys out there like Huntley and McCoy who are likely waiting and will go to a team who drafts a QB high. Chase Daniels did just that the other day in signing with LAC. These backups know their roles as mentors and are really just, at this point, looking to establish themselves as guys who are candidates to transition to roles as QB coaches later on. I like this sort of backup but we are beyond Dak needing a mentor.
The other type of back that is out there is, what I call, the "cautionary tale." Guys who never met high expectations provided by draft or contract status. Think Winston, Smith, and RGIII in that group. This is likely the sort of guy we want. However, this group will expand. Garapallo will be out in SF after the draft. Darnold and the Jets are gonna part ways. If I had to guess those two young guys are the targets with Darnold being top. Why? MM has an excellent reputation for developing QBs. Darnold is a solid preseason or two away from getting another chance as a starter. Having a year or two with solid coaching may allow us to flip him for something.
We did sign Andy Dalton to a 1 yr deal last season and Griffen was a mid-tier fa signing so it is possible. If they are going to resign Lee for 5 million, why not sign a better, more healthier option for a little more? Now you are dreaming. Stephen isn't going to entertain any of that. That is fine as well, just have 1 mid-tier signing to go along with signing a veteran backup QB. Sherman or Hayward would be a nice addition at the position. If we were going to do anything else in free agency, my pick would be a starting corner so we are not wedged into absolutely having to take one in the first round. We don't want either Brown or Lewis out there starting, so give me Sherman.
Kitna was actually very good. Thought Dalton played well for the most part last season. No thanks! Veteran backups, Kitna Orton Weedon Beuerlein Dalton etc... have been awful as the past has proven.
Stick w/Gilbert & save the $. Smith's injury took its toll. Thus, he's no longer a starter.
He just lost his job to Fitzpatrick, his days as a starter look to be over.I bet Smith is waiting for a better opportunity to play. If he waits all he way into training camp and preseason he is probably the first QB to be signed in case of starter injury. Or if teams dont get a young QB in the draft.
You're just naive to expect all the team's problems to be fixed without even drafting. I don't need to know anything about the prospects in the draft to know all the answers to our problem can not be found through free agency. You are just further showing your naivety by just going there. You most certainly earned the "facepalm" you got from me and now you have earned more.I did not forget the draft in any way shape or form, but I want to win this year, and I do not see any DT in this draft that will be any better than what we have now in year 1, besides maybe Barmore. Most DL take a year or two to become competitive. Jones is the best guy remaining to greatly improve our DL play this year. Since you gave me the Captain Picard embarrassed face, I am assuming you know of a bunch of DTs that are going to come and play at the level that Jones can give us right away - right? I will be waiting.

Remember the connection, he played under MM before.I think he wants a younger guy. McCoy is definitely going to one of the teams picking 1-3. Smith is just too old and physically beaten up
What a dumb reply... Andy Dalton is not Alex Smith, Everson Griffen took a cheap one-year deal, DaQuan Jones isn't doing that. How can you compare those two anyway? Last but not least, they are not signing Sean Lee for any price. That's just a dumb idea. He is finished as a player. Maybe they put him on the coaching staff. We did sign Andy Dalton to a 1 yr deal last season and Griffen was a mid-tier fa signing so it is possible. Im surprised Jones is out there still. Not old, not expensive and good for 600 snaps a yearMM said in his PC this week, that the team has been in contact with a few veteran QB's, I believe Alex Smith is on top of our wish list. He was taken #1 in the draft by the 49ers when MM was their OC.
