Felix Jones would have to get stronger and needs a more explosive first step.
How do you judge a college running back abilities to translate to the NFL?
- Remove all bias thoughts as emotions hamper logical analysis.
- Ask: How does contact effect him? Does he go down eveytime he is touched? Running through holes the size of the grand canyon doesn't make a great NFL running back.
- Ask: How explosive is his first step. Can he explode through small cracks in the offensive line so fast that defensive linemen cannot react fast enough?
Look back at some of the all-time NFL great running backs. Emmitt Smith, Barry Sanders, Sweetness, Ladainian Tomlinson, Marshal Faulk. They went from zero to full speed in the blink of an eye. They also had either a low center of gravity and/or were very strong in their legs and core.
Felix Jones lacks several tools he needs to make it as an NFL back. That doesn't mean he cannot do it. He just isn't ready yet.
With Barber starting and time, maybe that is what Felix Jones needs. Having Houck doesn't hurt either!
Most people disagree with me, but Mike Hart would be my choice. I think he is the perfect 3rd down completment back for Barber. He is scrapy and strong for his size like Barber and has great vision. The only thing he lacks is breakaway speed, but you don't have to have breakaway speed in the NFL. All breakaway speed does is give you a chance at a 90 yard TD run. Those are extremely uncommon in the NFL in the first place. Even backs without breakaway speed can break off 40 yard runs if they break containment. Emmitt used to do it all the time.
