Aldon Smith Is the Biggest Wild Card in the 2011 NFL Draft

When Missouri DE Aldon Smith announced his intentions to leave school early for the NFL back in January, it didn’t exactly send shock waves through the world of sports.

Smith’s announcement wasn’t anywhere to be found on the front page of the USA Today sports page the following day, it wasn’t the lead story on Pardon the Interruption and it sure wasn’t a heavy topic of interest on any of the thousands of nationwide sports radio shows.

The lack of attention shouldn’t have been a shock to Smith or any of his supporters, considering he was, after all, a relatively unknown commodity.

I'm intrigued with this guy... I think he could be a possibility with the 9th pick. He's 6-5 and 260, wow pair him with Ware and you possibly will have the two fastest edge rushers in the NFL.

idk aldon does look or test as fast as spencer did when he came out...But maybe spencer is just a lazy player (which i think he is).

But i would like aldon smith but not at 9 maybe in the teens.

He timed slower than people thought he would, and he looks like a stick.

Im not sure where the enamor comes from, what round would people want to look at him?

Ill take this time to pimp Justin Houston. Hes the man.

Because he is physical and a beast at the point of contact.

The had an interview with him on ESPN today, NFL Live, I believe. Did not come off as overly bright, but I guess you dont have to be to chase QBs.

I think it might have been nerves. He has not had a lot of national face time.

beat me to the article...was gunna post this.

anyways, i am 50 50 on aldon. I've seen several people praise him, but the majority have something negative to say about him (plays too stiff, lack of lateral quickness off the edge, etc)

I honestly think Rob Ryan can do with what hes got at the OLB position. I can see him get the best out of Victor Butler this year. Don't be surprised to see Victor starting for us if and when Spencer walks (but that is assuming spencer doesn't improve under ryan). Regardless, I think one of the guys in the shadows of Ware will come through this year. Having said that, we have other needs to adress (even if you can "never have too many pass rushers")

Aldon Smith = Manny Lawson

Manny is a stick. You can use Smith as an interior guy as well while being creative.

I'm done with Spencer... I believe internally the Cowboys are too.

As an FYI, Smith ran a 4.67 at the combine. He also ran a 4.86. Bad start with his second run but that's how you get the 4.74 time. He is not slow. He has a confirmed time of 4.67 on the books.

Good point. Plus people put too much stock in 40 times for OLB/DE. How does he play? Smith plays fast. Even at 4.74, at 260 lbs, thats fast. I find the shuttle to be a better indicator for explsion. OLB need a quick 'get off' not track speed.

I agree...
