News: Good article on Michael Gallup

Mike Gallup uses a sneaky-good turn and go move at the line of scrimmage.

It has proven effective in many of his attempts to get open early in coverage.
He was one of the better route runners in college that I've seen in several years.

He progressed quickly in the NFL relative to many WRs in their rookie seasons.

Can be very dangerous for some long pass plays once he and Dak get on the same page and timing.
It will happen.

The mid route moves were a big part of the timing issue with Dak throwing to Gallup.

In the play below Gallup is delayed more than Dak expected which resulted in the ball being thrown long.

When watching the All-22 Dak starts his throwing motion earlier in that route than it than it would seem from just watching this view.

When both are in camera view it's fairly straight forward to see where the WR would be with about half as much delay. With zero delay the ball would have been short.

Obviously if the stutter step delay is needed to get open that's not a problem but the WR has to do it with consistent timing such that the QB knows where to "aim".

The QB needs repetitions with each WR on each of these long routes; however, the WRs also need to work independently of the starting QB on perfecting the consistency of their timing.

The receiver is supposed to sell the route, Gallup did such a good job that Apple was at the register waiting for his change. Dak just missed him and he knows it as he gave a little shout out to LensCrafters at the end of the video.

How about you throw it *after* the stutter step instead of before?

A QB should aim based on the route he sees the WR run, not the route he wished he had run. The hitch was done by 0:03. The ball passes his hands at 0:07. 4 seconds. That's almost a punt hang time. Dak threw the ball well after the hitch and just missed bigly.

Shamelessly taken from an article by Bob Sturm about six weeks ago on the Athletic.
