Love these no guaranteed money contracts.

IRVING, Texas -- The Dallas Cowboys are not sure when Amobi Okoye will be cleared to return to the football field from what has been called a personal medical issue that kept him out of the game in 2013, but they have bought themselves some time and insurance.

Okoye signed a two-year deal with the Cowboys last week that did not contain any signing bonus or guaranteed money. Okoye, who hopes a reunion with defensive coordinator Rod Marinelli will rejuvenate his career, will make $730,000 in 2014 and $870,000 in 2015.

Running back Ryan Williams signed a one-year deal with no signing bonus or guaranteed money worth $570,000.

The Cowboys have signed five players as free agents so far without signing bonuses: Okoye, Williams, Brandon Weeden, Caleb Hanie and Anthony Spencer.

Spencer has $250,000 of his $1.25 million base salary guaranteed provided he does not reinjure his knee. Jeremy Mincey received the largest guarantee among the Cowboys' free-agent additions at $2 million. Henry Melton received a $1 million signing bonus and would be guaranteed another $9 million in 2015 if the Cowboys pick up his three-year option. Terrell McClain received a $300,000 signing bonus.

Contracts are only bad after the fact. All of the deals cited are for guys who can't command anything so there really shouldn't be much praise here. We've always seemed to dig holes with 2nd and 3rd contracts - that is where our problems usually come from

The pay scale has gotten to a level in the NFL where guys can build a house have two failed business's and still retire on the guaranteed portion of a contract, it's dangerous to hand out that kind of money and expect a full return, you might even say it's foolish but it's just as foolish to think billionaires are gonna keep doin it.

Melton's contract is worth praise.

The others, not at all. Hopefully nobody would guarantee anything to a guy who sat out all of last year.

Two years in Okoye is smart, too. Wonder why Williams' deal was only for one. If he hits, we'll have two RBs up at the same time.

I agree with you on one point– it's that follow contract that has been a ball-breaker for the Cowboys if it's for a player that the organization favors.

However they do deserve props for getting some of these guys to sign multiple year deals.

We all remember the Laurent Robinson situation– the guy comes on like gangbusters and he's lost to free agency after one season.

I agree. I'm quite pleased. Can't really think of too many regrettable contracts still on the roster. And this is coming from a team who had possibly some of the worst contracts in the NFL.

Romo got a big deal but you pay for a franchise QB. Just hope his back will hold up.

Witten is getting paid a lot but he earned it and it'll run out soon.

The Carr contract is a bit of a disappointment if he continues to play like the second half of last season.

The Free contract was a disaster but we redeemed ourselves with the pay cut.

Sean Lee is a disappointment if he continues to miss 6+ games a season.

Other than that, we have some excellent players still on their rookie contracts. We some guys like Melton and Okoye on "test drive" deals. We have guys like Bernadeau and Scandrick on moderate deals. Only deal I'd probably un-do right now would be Carr.

What was the last bad contract this team gave out?

Carr was market value and a good signing at the time. So was Austin. Even Lee's contract was structured intelligently with playing time incentives.

I hated that we payed age in Hatch....oh wait. No we didn't.

You're spouting a tired narrative. I can't be upset with what the organization has done on the cap front the last 4 years or so....

Now next year when we have some money to burn...

Maybe it was his preference. Doesn't want to lock into a 2 year minimum deal when he could make more with a good season and still likely have another minimum offer to fall back on if he doesn't get a lot of time.

I think it's because guys like Okoye and Milton have shown much more upside in the past than Williams, plus I don't think there is a position that has lost much luster than RB... They're not quite a "dime a dozen" but the perception is that they are much more replaceable than most other starters on the team.

I'm sure the players prefer one year on the minimum deals. I just think the clubs should insist on an affordable second year option. I said it at the time when we signed Robinson. The showcasing of talent itself is really valuable.

I'm guessing Williams had a backup second team option. Still, hate to give a guy reps and a spot only to lose him if it pays off. One more reason for me to root for Malena, I guess.

I mean, you named it really. I don't know the specifics of Sean Lee's deal but I wouldn't call it a bad contract. He's the best defensive player by far when healthy. Just can't stay healthy. But I would call the Carr contract a bad contract. We paid him top dollar for a CB and he was never a top notch CB. Personally, I don't like the emphasis on CBs. I find them less important. I think you can get by with an above average CB. The difference in overall impact between an elite and above average CB is nothing to compared to the difference between an elite and above average pass rusher or MLB.

Yeah, but stll. We've got the leverage. Even if it's a small roster bonus and double the minimum in the second year. we should cuff these guys for multiple years.

Those contracts cited don't even make up for the Spencer ordeal, much less any of the other terrible contracts......

Franchising Anthony Spencer was not stupid. And, yes, these are small contracts here recently.

Most player we have signed to two year deals after the Robinson situation.

But it also takes two to tango.

If i'm Williams I want a one year deal to rehabilitate my image and value.

Franchising Spencer was the right move. And his first year he more than lived up to the deal. His second year he had a bad injury. Stop grading in hindsight.

And what are all these other "terrible contracts" that we've done recently?

Clearly there is a shift here, Jerry is no longer taking on every contract like it's a Super Bowl make or break deal.

That's worth the most praise of anything.
