Good contracts

What was the last bad contract this team gave out?

Carr was market value and a good signing at the time. So was Austin. Even Lee's contract was structured intelligently with playing time incentives.
It's been a while. Much longer than most think. I'm sure the answer most will give is Tony Romo.

Franchising Anthony Spencer was not stupid. And, yes, these are small contracts here recently.

Franchising Spencer back to back was a huge waste of cap space. While they couldn't force him to sign a long term deal, they should have offered him a nice contract after 2011.

They tried. There was a deal to be had prior to franchising him the first time, but they balked at the aav. Barring a long term deal, though, franchising was the right option.

.

I agree with you on one point– it's that follow contract that has been a ball-breaker for the Cowboys if it's for a player that the organization favors.

However they do deserve props for getting some of these guys to sign multiple year deals.

We all remember the Laurent Robinson situation– the guy comes on like gangbusters and he's lost to free agency after one season.

And he suk'd! Is he even in the league anymore???

The first time was fine. The second not so good. We were switching back to 4-3 and 10.6m could have bought a couple of comparable or better players. The market died for DEs and there were a lot of bargains out there.

Actually you're right. I thought it was a close call, but the right move at the time we had to use the tag, and then the DE market ended up being softer than most people expected it to be.

I don't know if he's still on the Jag's roster or not. He supposedly suffered 4 concussions during his one season there.

Ouch! He is the perfect example of what usually happens to us... one great year, big contract, and then bam! He is injured or forgets how to play. I am soooo happy we got outbid on that one.

That last 'bad' contract was the Austin one. It was only bad because of the cap penalty our division opponent handed down on us. According to the rules at the time, it was an excellent contract taking advantage of our income advantage during what was supposed to be a capless year.

Two years in Okoye is smart, too. Wonder why Williams' deal was only for one. If he hits, we'll have two RBs up at the same time.

Is it because Williams is RFA in 2015? Lots of guys don't want to lose that

I hated that we payed age in Hatch....oh wait. No we didn't.

You're spouting a tired narrative. I can't be upset with what the organization has done on the cap front the last 4 years or so....

Now next year when we have some money to burn...

Ratliff Austin spencer Romo's is questionable. Carr. The constant restructuring is questionable. Franchising spencer was a bad move any way you slice it. I know hindsight is 20/20 but can't turn a blind eye to the crap contracts Jerry has given in the not so distant past.

Ware and Austin alone crippled our cap. Lets not pretend Jerry knows what's he's doing.

Flat out bullcrap what they did to us with that one.

WHAT?

We franchised Anthony Spencer for 2 seasons.... $8.856 Million in 2012 for 11 sacks and $9.6 Million in 2013 for two tackles.....

You $18.456 Million dollars for that? Yeah, you're right.... That's not stupid....

20/20 hindsight makes you a contract expert!

He was coming off a year as the most dominant player on the D. Too bad the flux capacitor was broken and we couldn't have travelled to late 2013 before making the offer.

I think it goes without saying that Mincey received too much in guaranteed money. Reminds me a lot of what they did with Livings and Bernadeau.

The same Bernadeau who covered up all of Doug Free's warts all last year and essentially blocked two guys per play every snap?

Ok.

The Ware contract was one of the best superstar contracts ever given out. It worked out perfect for both sides. The Austin contract was fine until the cap penalty, sometimes you have to pay to keep your young stars. Austin didn't fulfill his end of the deal, but that was because of injuries. Players get hurt in the NFL.
