Good GMs make tough decision

The great general managers know when a player and the team need to divorce.
Ozzie Newsome & Jerry Reese has made this kind of decisions over the years. I believe if you are good at your job you don't worry about cutting old veterans. As a good GM you have the confidence that you will find a replacement in the draft...and allow your team not to get old with aging(costly) veterans pass their prime...like some of the current Cowboys.

We don't have a influx of aging veterans...but they are on the border line. With not many proven replacement on the current roster.

Some day we will draft a proven safety...how long ago did Darren Woodson retire.

You touched on the most significant problem with the Cowboys under Jones. Loyalty to his players. It's actually one of the things I like about him. Unfortunately it's counter productive to fielding the best team possible.

You call it loyalty

I call it

Poor planning
Inability to evaluate talent

Yeah, ones with great experience.
Yeah experience missing the playoffs. I'm ready to move on from at least half of the oldest guys on the team.

I'm just posting the list. I don't know if it's good or bad per se.

32 Romo, Tony:
He is right at the borderline of where I'm comfortable with them giving him a new contract. Garrett referenced him as a "young" player presumably meaning that he has not played that many years.

Biggest concerns:
30 Ware, DeMarcus
30 Witten, Jason
30 Hatcher, Jason: Free Agent after 2013

Often Injured Anyway:
28 Austin, Miles
31 Ratliff, Jay

Not that great at any age:
29 Sensabaugh, Gerald

Stopgap players:
27 Bernadeau, Mackenzy
29 Armstrong, Anthony
29 Vickers, Lawrence
30 Livings, Nate

I don't expect these players to be on the team Day-1 of the season:
27 Connor, Dan
29 Free, Doug
29 Spears, Marcus
29 Cook, Ryan

Plenty young for a backup QB:
30 Orton, Kyle

While it is true that Romo only has played about a total of 5 full seasons since he started almost halfway through 2006 and missed a lot of 2010, he also has gotten REALLY WORKED the last couple of years because of the crappy O line.

So I reckon he has about as much wear and tear NOW as someone that played a couple of more years.

Good observation....

The poor bastid had broken ribs, punctured lung, broken collar bone, a hand swollen the size of an orange, and yet, this "loser" still wanted in the game.

Plus, the fool still has to tell his offense where to line up during games?

Why he hasn't won at least 2 SB's is beyond me?

Seems reasonable. It's a really difficult thing to determine. Farve took a lot a beatings also.

This point is moot if we shore up the offensive line. From the contract Romo is like to get we are not going to have to reckon with him until 2016 which will be when the 4 rookie contract players will already have been taken care of. Ware's contract is around the same time.

I think right around that time is when those guys take a pay cut, retire or move on.

This is why I am not overly concerned with our ability to sign the 4 in question. Austin and Ratliff will be long gone. I think we have three more years of Romo and Ware and after 2016 that were looking at over $30m off the cap and we are looking for a QB to rebuild the offense around. Hopefully Bryant can stick around for that.

I really don't see how it would be difficult to balloon contracts so you could.

And I think people that malign Austin and Jones for signing him should recognize the only reason why that contract sucks is because of the cap penalty.

Well sure. Vanishingly few non-starters stick in the NFL until they're 30. (Other than kickers and long-snappers). The Ravens roster (you know, that Newsome built) has 14 guys who are 30 or older on it. The Cowboys roster may be a lot of things, but old it ain't.

And they just won a SB. And have been right close to getting to it the last few years.

While we have not even come close to sniffing it.
