Good Heads Up by Someone

I was re-watching the 4th quarter tonight, and noticed something that didn't stick out to me while watching on Sunday...

With a little more than 6 minutes left in the game, the offense ran the ball on a 3rd and 1 and was barely able to get a 1st down. If going by the yellow line, which I know isn't perfectly accurate, then about less than half the football was at the yellow line. The strange thing was that the officials just waved for a first down and didn't bring out the sticks for measurement...

Whether it was Romo or a coach who knew it was close, within seconds, Romo quickly got the offense in place to run a play to prevent the challenge. The cameras show Lovie Smith is on the sideline complaining about not getting a measurement...

A few plays later, Marion Barber's 54-yard run gets the Cowboys close to the goal line and a couple of plays later, a touchdown. This drive sealed the game...

While it was 27-10 before all this happened, there was still the possibility of anything happening. If the Cowboys were to have had to punt, the possibility of Hester doing some magic or Grossman having a fluke in play-making ability could have changed the game.

I haven't heard anything said about this, but I have heard a lot of reasonable complaining about the ref's. In this case, they potentially helped... either way, it was a good heads up by someone.

Even if JUST A NOSE of the football is at the yellow line, it's a FIRST DOWN.

The refs got it right then.

The referees don't go by the superimposed yellow line on your TV screen. If the chains are short of a yard line and the ball is touching the yard line, they don't need to measure it -- it's a first down.

oh well we Won I don't think that was a factor in the game, plus when barber had the big run i think he was in the end zone, they placed it on the one.

Like you said, the yellow line isn't perfect, but I believe they try to position it so that if any part of the football is past it, it is a 1st down. Same as the goal line. If so, and if the line was positioned correctly, it was a 1st down anyway.

Just one botched measurement short of a victory for the Bears. I wonder if Wrecks used that in his argument to remain the starter. He was robbed.

I saw a game this week where they were over the line by half a football and didn't make it. I guess it isn't that accurate.

Yes, it was a heads up play by someone, presumably Romo.

But realistically, there was little danger of Chicago's offense (most notably Rex) suddenly bursting on the scene and scoring 17 points while suddenly summoning the energy to stop our offense which gouged them almost the entire 2nd half.

Lets not over dramatize this.

BTW - Somewhere I thought the rules allowed for teams to request a measurement but I don't know under what circumstances.

Dallas looked like they came up short on that play to me, none the less it was close enough to have it measured and they showed Lovie Smith asking for the measurement but the ref just walked away. As others have pointed out this was a poorly officiated game.

Just before that 3rd and 1, Dallas had a 2nd and 7. Barber ran for 6 yards, just short of the first down. They brought out the chains and measured at that time. That gave the refs a very good reference point as to just how far Dallas needed to go to get the first down. When Barber ran it on 3rd down, the refs saw that Dallas met the mark.

I think the refs knew they blew the call at the end of the half. I do believe that when refs realize they screwed up but can't do anything about it, they try and make up for it later in the game by letting close calls go in favor of the team on the wrong end of the previous bad call. I think we saw some of that in the bears game. In the 1st half they were calling everything against Dallas but in the 2nd half some close calls wen't our way. I think they were make up calls.

I thought for sure they were gonna measure that. I even remember Lovie Smith on the sideline saying something to the effect of "you gotta measure that". I guess the refs had a better view than any of us.

My gripe with the refs at the end of the first half was that when Wade wanted to QUESTION about what time remaining should have been, they just ran off the field in a hurry before Wade could even do so. THAT'S what really got me.

I don't know-but it seems like the refs want to avoid anything when the half ends and just run back into the locker room as fast as they can. It was alot like that Eagles/Saints playoff game last year when Colston clearly caught that long pass at the end of the half(it was stripped out of his hands AFTER his knee hit the ground)-but when Payton wanted to question it, everyone all but ran off the field.

The league really needs to address this.

RedBall would've went for it on 4th down and we would've scored. It matters not.:p:

Hold on now, I thought the refs were anti-Cowboy? Where are all the 'refs were paid off' people?

Well, it doesn't really matter, because according to the pathetic media this week.
Rex Grossman lost the game....the Dallas Cowboys didn't win it. Last time I knew, Rex doesn't played on their VAUNTED Defense....
At least that's all I am seeing and hearing. Maybe I'm just not hearing any good comments on Dallas.

But, that is ok.....let's keep on winning, and care less what is said or printed.

Just for clarification, I wasn't trying to overdramatize anything about the Bears' offense, especially not Rex. But you have to leave the possibility open to any team in the league being able to put up points within minutes. The Bears did it last year against Arizona (not to say that we are talent-wise comparable to Arizona) and there are plenty of other games with 4th quarter comebacks, regardless of whoever the more talented team is.
