Bentley could undergo more surgery

Associated Press

BEREA, Ohio (AP) - LeCharles Bentley will likely undergo more surgery on a serious knee injury that cost him last season, is jeopardizing another and could end his NFL career.

Cleveland Browns general manager Phil Savage said Bentley is considering another operation to repair the left patellar tendon he tore on the first full-contact play of training camp last summer.

"If he does elect to have the surgery, then obviously he won't be here for 2007 as an active player," said Savage, adding "it's more likely he will have surgery."

A two-time Pro Bowl selection in New Orleans, Bentley signed a six-year, $36 million free agent contract in March to play for the Browns, his hometown team. But he had his first season in Cleveland end freakishly.

While blocking on a running play, Bentley tore his tendon planting his foot. Following surgery, he contracted a staph infection, which caused further damage to his knee and required another operation.

Savage said even if Bentley has a third operation and can't play in '07, the team will carry him on their roster and reassess his condition next year.

"We certainly owe LeCharles an opportunity to see where he's going to be," he said. "This time next year I think we'll have a much clearer picture in terms if he is really a legitimate piece of the puzzle here or has the injury been so devastating that he may never play again."

To be fair, the injury might not have happened if he'd been here or somewhere else...

Injuries happen. If he had landed here last season, he may not have incurred the injury and would've helped strengthen our offensive line.

The good thing is he will only be 28 in Nov so he still has time to recover and hopefully next season (at 29) he will be able to return. I hate to see this kind of thing because its just one of those freak deals that no one controls. But you are right I thought this would have solidified our center position for a long time. 6yr $36 million? Wow. Jerry is glad too!

Or did he have a pre-existing weakness that would have likely surfaced regardless of the locale a la Irvin and his narrow spinal column.

That sucks for him and the Browns. What a snake-bitten organization.

That's certainly a possibility. I hope that's not the case. He's a great offensive lineman with a few more good years to look forward to (barring any further complications with his present injury).

True, but it was a good fantasy while it lasted. :) Too bad my nightmare of Rivera seems to never want to end.

I hate it when really good football players get hurt. This kid can flat out play. It sucks that he might not be able to for longer than he has already missed out on.

I would have been willing to pay that kind of money for Bentley- I wanted him here badly! I watched some game film of him in 2004 and he was a monster - he ate people up! The Best center in Pro Football. And now ... just another injured player hoping to come back. Will he ever be able to be what he was?
We really dodged a bullet there; as bad as Rivera has turned out, at least he played. The Browns for all that money have got NOTHING so far.

Best of luck to him on a speedy recovery.

If I could go back in time and sign a guy from last season's free agent class, LeCharles Bentley and Steve Hutchinson would be atop my list.

Well, kinda........His back injury depleted his potential, IMO. A back injury + a big man x pushing around 300 lbs for a living= NG squared.

Make New Orleans look better.

I mean basically it was a trade with the Browns getting Bentley and NO getting Faine. I know that it "might not have happened" if he was with the Saints, but it did, and NO still has their starting center.

Football aside, I hope he's ok in the long run.

Yeah, I liked that trade by NO to get Faine. Faine is a lot like Al Johnson, but I think he's shorter which gives him better leverage.
