This is a HUGE blow to Microsoft's Windows platform when such a huge high profile company completely bans Windows.

==================

Google is phasing out the internal use of Microsoft’s ubiquitous Windows operating system because of security concerns, according to several Google employees.

The directive to move to other operating systems began in earnest in January, after Google’s Chinese operations were hacked, and could effectively end the use of Windows at Google, which employs more than 10,000 workers internationally.

“We’re not doing any more Windows. It is a security effort,” said one Google employee.

“Many people have been moved away from [Windows] PCs, mostly towards Mac OS, following the China hacking attacks,” said another.

New hires are now given the option of using Apple’s Mac computers or PCs running the Linux operating system. “Linux is open source and we feel good about it,” said one employee. “Microsoft we don’t feel so good about.”

In early January, some new hires were still being allowed to install Windows on their laptops, but it was not an option for their desktop computers. Google would not comment on its current policy.

Windows is known for being more vulnerable to attacks by hackers and more susceptible to computer viruses than other operating systems. The greater number of attacks on Windows has much to do with its prevalence, which has made it a bigger target for attackers.

Employees wanting to stay on Windows required clearance from “quite senior levels”, one employee said. “Getting a new Windows machine now requires CIO approval,” said another employee.

In addition to being a semi-formal policy, employees themselves have grown more concerned about security since the China attacks. “Particularly since the China scare, a lot of people here are using Macs for security,” said one employee.

Employees said it was also an effort to run the company on Google’s own products, including its forthcoming Chrome OS, which will compete with Windows. “A lot of it is an effort to run things on Google product,” the employee said. “They want to run things on Chrome.”

The hacking in China hastened the move. “Before the security, there was a directive by the company to try to run things on Google products,” said the employee. “It was a long time coming.”

The move created mild discontent among some Google employees, appreciative of the choice in operating systems granted to them - an unusual feature in large companies. But many employees were relieved they could still use Macs and Linux. “It would have made more people upset if they banned Macs rather than Windows,” he added.

Google and Microsoft compete on many fronts, from search, to web-based email, to operating systems.

While Google is the clear leader in search, Windows remains the most popular operating system in the world by a large margin, with various versions accounting for more than 80 per cent of installations, according to research firm Net Applications.

Thought that was just a browser. I was thinking of a full OS for the computer.

Chrome is a browser. Chrome OS, is a OS that runs (the UI) out of a browser interface. It *IS* an OS. It's a literal NETWORKED OS

EDIT: Here is an explanation of Chromium (Chrome OS)

If it is an OS why are they talking about using Mac OS or Unix/Linux OS for their computers?

Watch the video. It's a Network OS. All apps are web apps. It boots in seconds. (less than 10 seconds)

Since it's only web apps, it doesn't replace many apps used right now. Its supposed to be the future of computing. We just aren't that far into the future yet which is why you don't see many devices with it yet, though they are coming.

btw, Chromium is based on the Linux kernel. So, you are still using Linux.

Publicity stunt.

This might be some what of a publicity stunt, but is more than that. It's more of an outright attack on Microsoft. Considering that Microsoft has teamed up with Apple to attack Google, I'm not surprised in the least.

One thing you can't do is say is that this is "just a publicity stunt" because they are taking this extremely serious as removing all Windows computers out of a large organization like this is no small feat. It requires a huge initiative that is both disruptive, time consuming, and quite costly to do.

At the very least, Google is accomplishing three goals in doing this. Severally damaging Microsoft, removing Windows products from it's company for security purposes, and finally proving to other companies that dumping Windows even by mega corporations is feasible which is also a form of publicity.

Apple is switching the Bing search engine, Apple and Google are also patent trolling against Android / HTC together to stop the Android phones, and finally Apple and Microsoft are both part of the MPEG-LA and have already said they intent to go after Google and webM.

Ahhh... :laugh2:
So dropping Windows certainly doesn't sound like a publicity stunt, but I find it odd they'd offer new hires Apple Macs at all. But they're most likely reliant on them at this point.

Besides Apple hating Google, I don't see that as a reason to drop their OS. Mac OS X is very nice and it isn't hampered the way iPhone OS is. (though I reserve the right to watch Steve Jobs change that too) :laugh2:

i don't think this is true to an extent. google is a very tech savvy company and most likely has the personnel to adapt to the change quickly. other companies, however have many many people that barely get by on the knowledge of their own personal computer at work. the only reason they get by is because they use the OS at home(most likely) and that OS is windows for the vast majority of people. a switch from other major companies could result in a massive dip in productivity just because employees that aren't that computer savvy to begin with, will be trying to figure out how to navigate and effectively use the new OS to their advantage.

google can pull this off, most of silicon valley probably could too, but outside of tech companies, i think it would be very hard to do for oil companies, the government and many other types of companies.

We need to really do something to China to make then stop screwing with us. It's ridiculous.

I think it's pretty much a non-issue. Everyone is aware that Windows is the least "secure," but that's only because it's such a big target and has to cater to such a wider audience.

Google is probably one of the most high-profile targets for hackers. So it only makes sense that they would move to a more secure system. But for the vast majority of businesses that are not constant targets, the usability and familiarity with Windows trumps the security concern.

I agree.

And wouldn't "teaming up" constitute some type of anti-trust violation?

The reason they had the security issue in the first place was because they were still using IE6. You can't even get IE6 on any recent version of Windows. So, this doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me.
