Google just gave a stunning demo of Assistant making an actual phone call

Onstage at I/O 2018, Google showed off a jaw-dropping new capability of Google Assistant: in the not too distant future, it’s going to make phone calls on your behalf. CEO Sundar Pichai played back a phone call recording that he said was placed by the Assistant to a hair salon. The voice sounded incredibly natural; the person on the other end had no idea they were talking to a digital AI helper. Google Assistant even dropped in a super casual “mmhmmm” early in the conversation.

...

Pichai says the Assistant can react intelligently even when a conversation “doesn’t go as expected” and veers off course a bit from the given objective. “We’re still developing this technology, and we want to work hard to get this right,” he said. “We really want it to work in cases, say, if you’re a busy parent in the morning and your kid is sick and you want to call for a doctor’s appointment.” Google has published a blog post with more details and soundbites of Duplex in action.

What's really funny is that they are assuming the person they called was a human :D

What if the person who took the call was also an AI? :)

It would actually make more sense if one of the conversations was going to be powered by AI that it would be the business first since that would be the evolution of the automated "Press 1 for .. press 2 for .." etc. phone menus.

When you think about it, when both sides are handled by an AI, it's really a very inefficient way to use AI given they would not need to speak in human-based languages.

With adoption, you would think there would be a tone setup universally that would prompt the AI to tell it the other end is AI also and then they could just communicate more efficiently.

If they truly make AI more like humans, then it will be funny to see AI get into arguments with other AI :D

Instead of drivers yelling, "Hey man, are you blind?" we will have self-driving cars texting car-to-car messages saying, "Greetings fellow automotive being, are you update challenged?" to which the other car would respond, "I avoid buggy beta updates like you have installed. Thank you and have a nice day!"

All the while, the humans sitting in both cars are staring at each other through windows conveying a child-like feeling of helplessness in their eyes wondering what's going to happen next.

...and acting as if this would never have happened if they were driving!

The AI will make the future so ugly.
Well yes,but I try and focus on the positives. Not as many dumbo counter people to deal with, and absolute must things like the holographic companion ”Joi” from Bladerunner 2049 I put in a pre-order for.

Maybe we're AI for an advanced species and we don't even know it

Great. An opportunity of getting even more telemarketing calls but they will be ones that will take me a second longer determining it is not a real person before hanging up.
