Since Google unveiled Nexus 7....thoughts?

I'm not a spec savy kind of person...just kind of go with design & functionality ...for those who are...thoughts on the specs?

Thanks

It's better than the Kindle Fire.

Not quite as good as the newest iPad. But, a very capable device.

I'm actually thinking about picking one up for myself - and - I'm a pretty pro-Apple kind of guy.

I like the size. I don't think 9" ~ 10" tablets are portable. I'd rather have something that has a smaller footprint, but bigger than a smartphone.

At the price point Google is offering for this device I feel it's a good buy.

Only thing I don't like was no removable storage. That would have been nice.

I have a feeling I'm not going to use it very much unless I use it to replace my Kindle 3, but I picked up a 16GB one and one of the cases for it.

I think I got it mainly to watch videos (which I don't do very often) and surf the web when on the go, since surfing on my phone sucks with the really small screen. If I don't have a problem reading on it, I will probably use it instead of my kindle. Though, it will be nice to actually get to read magazines on it. The e-Ink kindle doesn't do magazines that require formatting very well. This should pleases Linux Journal who I cancelled my subscription due to them going Electronic only not long ago.

Yes, I know it's wifi only, but I can turn my phone into a hotspot for it. ;)

The 16GB one ($249) with the protective case, taxes and shipping ended up a total of $300 on the nose. Not bad.

A sd card slot would have been nice though. My phone not having one almost turned me off from using it, but so far I haven't needed it. I have about 22GB of free space on it.

btw, Google is already noting that the Galaxy Nexus will very soon be getting Jelly Bean.

Not holding my breath for the Verizon release.

But, it doesn't matter to me since the dev support for the GN is strong. One of the ROM makers will incorporate JB into their builds as soon as it's released.

I'm just waiting to see if AAPL comes out with an iPad Nano version. I may not be able to hold off for that long though.

Google is doing the releases for Verizon aren't they? This is a Google branded phone.

Technically, yes.

Goog releases their build, but Verizon has to massage it first for the CDMA build. GSM models get it earlier.

It all has to do with Verizon's need to control their 'proprietary' crap i.e. radios etc.

The strong dev support (for the GN) is the only saving grace for going with Verizon.

4.0.4. took longer than it should have to come out for the Verizon model.

I found this no G+ a few minutes ago: ClockworkMod's Jelly Bean Release for Galaxy Nexus. That is for the GSM model though. The Sprint and Verizon doesn't have anything yet.

Did a little more searching...

Google released an OTA update to JB at the IO. Someone ripped it from the dev phone. Seems that it works on both GSM and CDMA versions.

AND...

Found out that my favorite ROM - which I've been running for a few months now - already released a beta ROM.

I develop apps for a living, so I ordered one.

Here's a review with some benchmarks. It's definitely targeted at the Fire. Same price point and best performance will be browsing. The screen brightness and contrast isn't the greatest and the graphics performance is acceptable but average, so it won't be the best gaming or video device (though certainly still a good device for those use cases).

No rear facing camera and 16 KWhr battery are the only major hardware drawbacks I see after a quick skim of the review.

I just want to use it to surf the web.

Hotspot it with my Galaxy Nexus. Perfect solution for travel. Right now I travel with my MacBook Air and it works fine. But, I want to use a smaller device when out and about.

It appears on somethings we definitely think a like. That is why I bought it, with the options of possibly also replacing my Kindle. (/w the ability to read e-Mags too)

already got it on my vzw nexus ;)

Okay, I was questioning if I really wanted a tablet at all, but at the Nexus 7's price point, I figured what the hell. After seeing this review, I'm damn happy I got it. For it's price point, this thing absolutely kicks ***.

Google Now goes much deeper than just voice recognition and AI. It actually learns what you do through searching and starts to identify patterns. Additionally, it will give you information before you even ask for it. For instance, in the short period of time I’ve been using Now, it became convinced that I lived at my hotel in San Francisco (sad, I know). When I went out earlier today, it prompted me for directions back to my "house." Of course I corrected it and gave it my actual home address, but the functionality is fascinating. Later, when I left the hotel for the airport, Google Now presented me with a map and an estimated travel time of 27 minutes without having been asked to do so. It then repeated this magic when I landed.

I can't wait to get this device. :laugh2:
