And you probably already know this, but Google only makes money on their advertising. They try these other projects solely to get more eyes on their advertising. Chrome, search, gmail, Android -- none of that stuff makes them money except for the fact that they're ways to get more advertising money. So they end up attempting to create competitor sites for Twitter (failed with Jiaku) or Facebook (failing now with Google+), so they can rapidly grown their ad revenues.
I'm kind of torn as to whether this drives them to make their products
better, or just sufficient enough to get widely adopted based on brand recognition. For example, if Google hadn't bought Android, I don't think it would have went anywhere as an OS. And it's clear to me that the Android OS is not an optimum product.
