Jets Assistant Coach Apologizes for Tripping Dolphins Player

New York Jets assistant coach Sal Alosi apologized after blatantly tripping Miami's Nolan Carroll on the sideline during Gang Green's 10-6 loss to the Dolphins Sunday.

The strength and conditioning coach was ushered out of New Meadowlands Stadium by a staff member, ignoring interview requests by the New York Post and protected by two security members at an exit.

After the Jets confirmed he was the guilty tripper and the NFL announced it was reviewing the play, Alosi apologized.

"I made a mistake that showed a total lapse in judgment," Alosi said in a statement, adding that he apologized to Carroll and Dolphins coach Tony Sparano.

"My conduct was inexcusable and unsportsmanlike and does not reflect what this organization stands for. I accept responsibility for my actions as well as any punishment that follows."

"The team is reviewing the situation and is looking into the appropriate next steps,'' Jets media chief Bruce Speicht said in a statement.

During the third quarter of the game, Alosi -- on the sidelines wearing Jets raingear and white tennis shoes -- appeared to stick his left knee out and tripped Carroll as the cornerback ran out of bounds on punt coverage. Carroll fell and had to be attended to by medical staff on the Jets sideline, before eventually returning.

Alosi, who was wearing a green hat at the time, conspicuously switched to a black hat in the middle of the game. Then he took the hat off altogether.

Complete garbage. This is the kind of trashy behavior I expect from the eagles. Unacceptable.

Ugly. I was watching that game and Fouts pointed out immediately that the Dolphins player was tripped.

My question is how STUPID is that guy? There are only dozens of cameras there to capture something like that. What a ******* that guy is.

The Jets seem to thrive on being low class though. I guess it's really not all that surprising other than the stupidity involved.

What do you think of the reports that the Jets use sideline personnel to form wedges to block double teamed gunners on punts?

They were just talking about this on NFL network... I didn't notice it before, but it sure looks like those Jets guys are all coached to stand like that. They're perfectly spaced foot to foot, and all have their hands in their pockets.

I doubt that's a coincidence.

That sure looks like its on purpose. If a gunner gets pushed far enough out of bounds, the coaching staff would be a major impediment to him ever getting back on the field of play.

Rex Ryan is still his father's son. That's all I say about that.

I'm surprised he didn't say " I guess I'm just too full of NY Jets"

i wish they tripped that fiesty linebacker they have. He already said he would of gotten up and broke that guys leg lol

I think Rex has that 'snap and lose his mind' potential as well.

Apparently, they were standing like that on purpose:

Jets suspend Sal Alosi indefinitely
By Rich Cimini

The New York Jets have suspended Sal Alosi indefinitely after the team got "new information" that the strength and conditioning coach "instructed" five players to stand in a wall before he tripped a Dolphins player on Sunday.

Jets general manager Mike Tannenbaum announced the punishment after Alosi was suspended for the rest of the season and fined $25,000 on Monday.

"Over the last day as we continued our investigation we discovered some new information," Tannenbaum said. "The players at the Miami game were instructed by Sal to stand where they were forcing the gunner in the game to run around them. Based on that new information we've suspended Sal indefinitely, pending further review.

Tannenbaum said that as soon as the team learned the new information, the Jets contacted NFL vice president of football operations Ray Anderson.

"They support this initial decision that we presented to them," Tannenbaum said. "The league is going to look into this as well, as well they should. Once we get all the information we'll make a final determination."

Tannenbaum was clear in what happened.

"Specifically when Miami was punting they were asked to stand there by him," he said.

Tannenbaum said Alosi acted alone, that he wasn't told by anyone in the organization to instruct players to stand in a line. Addressing the media Monday, Alosi claimed he wasn't instructed by anyone to create a human wall.

Tannenbaum and coach Rex Ryan both insisted Monday that the players aren't coached to do that.

Tannenbaum said the team looked at the game film of the play and "it looked to me like it was unusual for them to be standing that way." The Jets interviewed the players who were standing near Alosi, but will not take any action against them.

"This is just about Sal," Tannenbaum said.

Could Alosi be fired for the move?

"All options are certainly on the table we're going to complete the review and get all the information," Tannenbaum said. "[Special teams coach] Mike Westhoff was not involved, Rex Ryan was not involved, but we just want to be thorough and get all the information."

Former Miami Dolphins linebacker Zach Thomas had accused the Jets Tuesday of deliberately forming a wall on their sideline to influence the Dolphins' gunner, Nolan Carroll.

Thomas was part of a growing faction that believes Alosi wasn't acting alone.

"They had to be ordered to stand there because they're foot to foot," Thomas said Tuesday on Miami radio station WQAM. "There's four of them, side to side -- five of them, I mean -- on the edge of the coaches' zone. They're only out there to restrict the space of the gunner.

"But there's more to it because I'm telling you, the only thing [Alosi] did wrong was intentionally put that knee out there. If he just stood there, there would never have been a problem, even if the guy got tripped. But there's more to this. He was ordered to stand there. No one is foot to foot on the sideline in the coaches' box."

There was a six-man line, starting with Alosi and defensive lineman Marcus Dixon (inactive). It's believed the other four also were inactive players. They were in a tight formation, almost like soccer players preparing to defend a direct kick. Their toes were right up against the boundary, with Alosi positioned in the corner of the coaches' box.

Yep, looks like.

Apparently since the beginning of the year. Ryan, and Westhoff, knew nothing about it though.. :laugh2:

According to Westhoff, the Jets aren't the only one coached to stand that way. There seems to be another AFCN team that practices that as well. Wonder who that could be...

LOL.. awesome in that it happened on the sidelines, but yeah it was weak.. :p:

I seem to remember a really good safety for Houston getting his knee tore up after turnover right before the half against the Dolphins. If I remember right Houston didn't run out the clock, turned it over then Marino threw a hail Mary and the guy tore his knee up, and Ryan wanted to kill Gilbride then and when it happened again against the Jets he lost it. lol. He and Gilbride were always getting into it about the run and shoot offense even though Houston had won a bunch of games in a row that season.
