The Great Goose weighs in on Norm's show this morning:

^Draft overall/strategy:
- Not a good crop. Only exception is WR which is better this year than last. Every other position not as good.
- This year, players will generally go 10-15 slots higher than they would in normal draft.
- I don't want to pick in top 20 this year. You would be overpaying $ for lesser players.
- Only around the 25-27th pick this year do you begin to get consistent bang for your $.
- There are not 32 players this year that I would consider second rounders.
- So there will be "need drafting" more than ever because this board is so thin. Don't reach two rounds for a guy though.
- Trade ups in first round? Likely less than usual. The top of round one isn't deep. Exceptions: If the last (of three good QBs) are there around 9-12, someone might trade up. There are some good centers around 20-32 and teams may trade up. Other than that, nada. Josh Freeman might have gone in the 20s last year (but will be picked higher this year).
- Overall, only once you get to the fifth round this year are you finally paying commensurate $ for players' talent.
- Historically there are 20-22 first round players, rest you are paying too much always.

^Positions that lack depth in draft
- QBs: Not deep at the top. First draft since 2001 when top two QBs are under 6-foot-3.
- DT/NT: Not good. These players may go 15-30 picks ahead of where they should in normal year.
- DE/LB: Bad board for 3-4 DEs/LB pass rushers, about the worst he's seen. Speed bad overall.
- ILB: Absolutely awful.
- LB: There are only 26 guys even worth drafting at LB this year, all rounds put together.

^What about picks 51 and 69?
- WR and safety are values on board in at that point where Cowboys stand right now.

^What can the Boys do with all their day two picks?
- There will be a decent WR available in every round this year. There will be smallish corners or safeties available. Also late, find a decent TE there. Linemen crop is so thin, ones that can play will be taken/reached for fairly early.

^Goose's info
- He has "off record" contacts with every team in NFL.
- He's talked individually (so far) to over 200 players in the draft. More to come.

I always appreciate information like this but I'm always left wondering if this is what Gosselin thinks or if he's just spouting out what he heard.

ILB: Absolutely awful

We'll see how true this is 5 years from now. Other than Curry (Lions are thinking of him at MLB), Maualuga & Laurinaitis_there are some interesting guys in upper middle rounds:

Kruger (inside or out)
Sintim (inside or out)
Brinkley
Williams (rocketing up boards due to his crazy speed)
Phillips (compared to future HOFer Zach Thomas)

Then there are guys like McKenzie, Franz Joseph, Ellerbe, McRath, McKillop, Mauga, Holtzclaw who could surprise.

*Definitely a better year for ILBs than last draft

it's a pretty crappy draft

Jerry Jones really did his homework making the Roy Williams trade, so far it hasn't hurt us, although his contract may

I think it is always a compilation of what he has heard with his own twist.

I like Goose just fine, but he misses on plenty as well for the very reason I just stated.

Some of the statements are just generalizations. It would be moronic to think that any pick below a certain point is poor value until you drop all the way to the 5th round. Some of the picks in each round will turn out to be amazing values and some will be total busts...like always. Maybe this year at certain positions, there may be more busts than usual due to teams reaching. We'll see.

over half our picks are from the 5th round and on, so that bodes well for us

we'll probably see alot of trading down with picks 51 through the 5th round

I don't think it is a great draft also believe it is better than most scouts think.

It is definitely not a fast class and I think that drives scouts nuts, but there are a lot of quality football players who lack great speed.

Goose talks to scouts and team officials and they help him form his opinions so on one hand he isn't overly emotional about the process but on the other he is swayed I am sure by scouts he trusts.

I tend to believe him about the OLB/DEs. We need one and will have to reach to get one or take one in r5. The plus OLB prospects will be gone by 51 imho.

One more reason the Roy Williams trade wasn't that bad. This draft class is generally weak, except at WR.

He doesn't mention CB's.

So, he thinks it's a deep class?

Personally, I think it's one of the worst ever.

I heard last year that this was going to be a thin draft and nothing anyone has said since has changed my mind. As was pointed out Jerruh using our first for Roy is starting to look real smart now. There is not one WR in the whole draft that you can really point to and say has more talent then Roy.
Or had shown more in college then Roy had. And with any draft pick you risk a bust. At the worst we have a very good WR in Roy.

We need a FS and maybe another ILB that can cover and that is really all that we NEED. As regards depth on the O line that can come later in developmental players. A NT is probably the only other possible need but if the boys coaches thing Sialvi can do the job then maybe not (may they be right!). Another CB who can cover would be nice to have but not a need.

Actually I f I were Jerruh I would be seriously looking at seeing if I can pick up some draft choices for 2010 which is already looking like a bumper crop.

For those who are criticizing the Roy Williams trade, pay attention to that statement.

has hit on the head this time with this draft. It's the first time I've seen a draft with no consensus franchise players. I thought I would never witness a draft like that.

My advice to the Cowboys, in a draft like this, if you're going to make a mistake, make it on the side of size. Go big early. It is the easier way to avoid mistakes. Don't fall for this 5'9, 5'10 defensive backs until later on the draft.

Much later.
