I finally got a chance to watch the press conferences last night.
Here are some of my deep thoughts:
1. I thought Jerry’s press conference was interesting. Sounded like he decided Saturday night he would make a change if things didn’t go well on Sunday. He sounded genuine to me and admitting he was in denial wasn’t easy for him. He does deeply care about the team’s success, beyond just cash in hand. However, I don't get a sense he is about to give up GM responsibilities. So I think Hostile is correct in saying we should just drop it.
2. Through his choice of words, I personally didn’t think Jerry was giving Garrett a tremendous amount of hope about being the coach after this year. My read was Jerry would have to see a big change in discipline, obviously playing really hard and 5+ more wins if he were to go with Garrett next year. I think this will be a tough hurdle for Jason given they have nothing to play for and our starting QB is out.
3. Seems like everyone in here was excited after hearing Jason’s press conference. I personally didn’t think he said anything specific and I wasn’t as thrilled with it, but you definitely got a good idea on his personality. He is a pretty serious guy who is into details and a routine. Definitely a good thing right now, but I am not sure if he has a personality to connect with players. You can be stern and still connect – he has always come across a little ‘distant’ to me.[/size]
4. The most interesting thing to me will be to see who has been making ‘playing time’ decisions. If Jason allocates time toward different players against the Giants (Choice, etc.) it could tell us that Wade (or Jerry) was heavy handed on who starts and how many snaps each player gets.
5. If I were Garrett I would shake things up pretty quickly to set a new tone. Like make a couple of starting lineup changes, etc. The most shocking thing for me on this team is still how afraid we have been to make changes when things aren’t working. This breeds an atmosphere of complacency and lack of accountability. Even the reports talking about the ‘antiquated’ defensive scheme don’t surprise me – the leadership has been unwilling to shake things up.
