My administrator or center director is a pretty cool guy, but he came up behind me today while i was reading a football article and commented that he's walked by my office a couple times and seen me sitting there reading football websites. It was an awkward conversation, then he just left and went to lunch. I apologized as he was walking away cause i really didnt know what to say, but its prolly in my best intrest to stay off this site while im at work from now on. I felt sort of embarrased the rest of the day, was talking to him in the afternoon and he acted like it had never happened, but i have the feeling it would be bad if he walked in on me doing it again.

Funny thing is i had a dream that this happened a few weeks ago and as i woke up it felt like it really happened, should have stopped posting at work then as i often dream things that happen a few weeks later and it was that sort of dream that felt like i was awake while dreaming. Oh well.

Im just wondering how many other zone members have gotten caught at work on this website and how you handled it.

I'm pretty sure I have been caught and my boss has never said anything but I also get my work done so he can't say much.

If you have an IT job this is the least of your worries...:D
well, i dont. But that brings up another question. Can IT monitor what sites im on and the amount of time spent on different sites ? and can my director call up IT and ask them to do this and get reports ?

Yes and probably 70% of all companies do this.

In fact a lot of companies also record your phone calls. I keep the internet in the background and always have and check in time to time on news updates. Done that for 15 years or so.

I am usually working from home or a hotel room, and anytime I am on this site it is on my personal laptop, unless it is well after business hours and I am on the road.

If you are going through a proxy. Yes they can.

I do it at my office for managers all the time. They pop in and ask me if they can have some help w/ someone who may be abusing the internet.

I send a tech up and punch in our proxy to route them through it and pull all of the browsing and time spent online.

If you have an office just set your computer screen up where it's not facing the entrance. If you're in a cubicle, get another job.

I'd hate to work for any place that actually did this.

As others mentioned, yes they can see where you've been, how long you were on each site and they can even take screenshots of what you see so be careful what you post/e-mail to others. Phones are the same, we used to have a co-worker so paranoid that she would only take personal calls on the fax line.

Most IT depts that I've worked in had the motto "Don't give them a reason" i.e. stay on top of your work, keep the attitude in check and most will overlook internet usage, especially if the boss is a sports fan and knows it's football season (I usually warn my co-workers I'll be unproductive on draft day/baseball trading deadline, etc so they know in advance).

I'm busted all the time by my supervisor. But considering I've walked in on her shopping for airline tickets and doing other personal stuff, it's not a big deal.

I'm in IT, but I'm also a "producer." Meaning that if I don't produce my required deliverables, then that might cause an issue. For the most part, they leave me alone.

interesting. well if someone were to look through my time spent on the net i think it would look bad since i open cowboyszone at 7am and leave it open but minimized until 5:30-6pm mon to thurs. so actually it would look like im on the net 10 hours a day, would it not ? even though i have other work sites pulled up as well.

BTW, im home now, im off on fridays. Can they fire me for that, dont i have to get written up first. ive been with this company for 6 years and ive only been reprimenaded once in the whole 6 years for missing a meeting.

well, my boss is a young guy and seems like the type that would prefer to handle things in house so as long as i dont do it anymore i think i'll be allright. Just worried that if he does call IT to look back at the past few weeks it will look pretty bad cause i always have the sight open but minimized.

My boss doesnt really like it either, but we both know he would have trouble replacing me so he never says anything. Besides I would rather be fired then stop surfing the internet and I always get my work done.

I don't take cigarette or coffee breaks. My lunches usually last 15 to 20 minutes unless I leave work and I'm here 10 hours a day.

They see me working infinitely more than they see me on the Computer for something personal.

I usually say, "taking a short break to see if there is anything interesting going on and to recharge my batteries."

Never been an issue.

I think you're sweating the small stuff, in the example above you're only on one site. Click on about 20 threads (Or click 5 threads 4 times) and it shows 21 links you went to.

If you're productive, get along with other employees, do well in reviews then you've got nothing to worry about (And yes, you'll get verbal warnings then written warnings with the exception of severe incidents: You get physical with someone, you steal from the company, etc.). Jimmy Johnson once told the story about John Roper falling asleep at a team film session (For those unfamiliar, Roper was inactivated then cut), Johnson said had that been Aikman or Irvin he would have tapped him on the shoulder and said "C'mon, this is a key game. We need you to focus"

Without knowing your supervisor I'd say he's either ribbing you or telling you in a nice way "You don't know how to look productive when the boss is around". If you were Roper you wouldn't hear it as a side comment, you'd be in his office getting a stern warning...that's when you'll need to worry.
