After doing quite a bit of research, I bought my very first gun yesterday.

I was always interested in what the process was like to get a gun "legally" in Texas.

Friday, I will meet a certified trainer at the Public Gun Range in North Garland to get a few hours of instructions on how to properly handle, shoot and maintain the firearm.

Everyone says that I should expect to be sore the next day because my body won't be use to the recoil.

Should be interesting.

Tactical weapon... nice...

Did you get the short barrel?

Not sure how that is chambered, but there are three lengths of shells. 2.75", 3" and 3.5"... The shorter the shell, the less the kick.

My Benelli Nova will shoot all three and I can tell you that there is CONSIDERABLE difference in the kick between 2.75" and 3.5" shells. A 3" load kicks at around 54 foot pounds...

Shotguns do kick... and they kick hard unless you are shooting a semi-auto. The most important thing to remember is to keep the stock pulled in snugly against your shoulder. If you don't, I promise you'll remember the next time...

I got the 18.5" Short Barrel.

Still not that strong on some of the "lingo" but the guy at Academy Sports told me that it can shoot a few different sizes. I only bought 2 cases of birdshots and I think those are 2 3/4.

He recommended I get buckshots for actual Home Defense but I will go back and get those later.

I am really interested in finding out how effective the Ear Protection is. My hearing is already bad enough.

You won't regret it. That is a very nice shotgun. My brother-in-law has one and I have shot it.

I would recommend buckshot as well, although pretty much any shotgun load is capable of killing someone. Buckshot will drive your point home, though.

You're definitely going to want ear protection on the range as shotguns are really loud... even cheap muffs make a big difference.

There are also a lot of laser sites for shotguns. Obviously you aren't going to miss at close range, but an intruder seeing that little red dot on his chest could make him turn and run without you having to fire a shot.

Moral to the story. If you're gonna invest in a scope for a shotgun, buy slugs, otherwise, what's the point?

Trickblue, what would you consider "cheap" Earmuffs?

The ones I bought were around $25.

Also, the people at Gun Shops are some of the funniest people in I have ever met.

One guy told me this true story about a man in Dallas recently:

A guy unfortunately kills a night burglar with his Maverick 88 Shotgun.

His gun is confiscated by the cops and goes to the store and buys another one.

A few days later, another burglar breaks into his house at night and he unfortunately kills him.

His gun is confiscated by the cops.

A reporter waits for the man to arrive at the Gun Store to buy another gun, sticks her mic in his face and says, "Why are you buying another gun to kill someone else"?

The man replies, "Don't want to talk right now but if you want to come by my house "at night", you can find out".

:laugh2:

Congrats!!

Thanks

No drive bys, just trying to make sure I have something more "dependable" then just a Security Alarm if someone tries to break into my home.

Just a thought --most law enforcement will load their shotguns with 2 rounds of double 00 buck and then a slug...That is how I would load it

This.

The first two rounds make sure you don't miss. The third finishes the job.

I load two rounds of #4 buck and a slug. Better coverage from more pellets, and they are still around 25 calibre.
