‘Gotham’ Fox TV series casting: The Penguin, Alfred and more

The one-hour drama, from Warner Bros. Television, focuses on the origins of Batman’s ally, Commissioner James Gordon, and the villains who made Batman’s hometown famous.

Actor Ben McKenzie, known for roles in “Southland” and “The O.C.,” will star as Jim Gordon, Warner Bros. announced earlier this month, and Robin Lord Taylor, Zabryna Guevara, Sean Pertwee and Erin Richards are now joining the cast.

Taylor (“Another Earth,” “Accepted”) has been cast as Oswald Cobblepot, the orphaned outcast who eventually becomes the gentleman villain The Penguin. Zombie fans may recognize Taylor from his guest appearance as Sam in an episode of “The Walking Dead” last season. In “Gotham,” Taylor’s character is described as having the brains of a chess grandmaster and the morals of a jackal.

“Oswald Cobblepot is a low-level psychopath (for gangster Fish Mooney) who hides his sadistic lust for power behind an exquisitely polite demeanor,” reads his official character description.

“Gotham” has also found its Wayne Manor butler Alfred Pennyworth in Pertwee (“Alan Patridge,” “Event Horizon”).

“A tough-as-nails ex-marine from East London, Alfred Pennyworth has loyally served the Waynes. Now, in the wake of their tragic deaths, he’s fiercely protective of the young Bruce Wayne,” Alfred’s character description reads.

Could be interesting, so glad it's not going to be about Batman in any way.

So a TV series set in the Batman universe with a Batman? Sounds about as dumb as the idea of creating a show about S.H.I.E.L.D. set in the superhuman universe and not have any superheroes or supervillians. :p

Well I would assume it was simply a "Pre-Batman" Universe.
Where as SHIELD was a "Post-Avengers" Universe.

Minor difference, but I believe it makes all the difference in that regard.

Yeah it's funny how like SHIELD the general idea is.

They are going to completely oversaturate us with comic book movies/tv until it is completely unwatchable, and it pretty much already is. And just with Batman specifically they are going to end up back in the Schumaker Batman Forever situation where it is watered down and not cool anymore, BatFleck.

They find something that works then completely beat it to death, with no originality.

It could be cool I guess.

I realize the difference, I just don't like the idea that much.

To be honest, I am really enjoying S.H.I.E.L.D. but it really is just a standard procedural for the most part.

Shield sucks. Hopefully this doesn't. The cast looks good. I'm guessing it will be much better.
