Gotta love Dez

Loved Dez's play on the final drive but he sure had trouble catching and holding on to the ball today! I'm sure the weather had something to do with that, but if he really wants to be regarded as one of the two or three best receivers in the game he has to clean that up. I don't think anyone questions his potential to be one of the best, but he must be more consistent to get that recognition. Of course, he also has to get the targets to show that but he got them today.

I was going to post a separate post on this..but here is as good as any..

Yesterday, by watching Dez, I got what some of the Romo critics have been saying. If you look at Dez's numbers he had a great day..but..if you watched the game, it was a different story. Not all, but I think that is what some of what Cowboys fans have been talking about? The, like Tony in a lot of instances, he redeems himself by making some big catches on that last drive..and yes I am taking of the one the referees said was not a catch..

You're right, he should have given up after that and went to the locker room early.

That was not my idea, maybe you were thinking it last night at some point but I wasn't. And its not a good solution to the problem either.

I know, you were being sarcastic.

But im just not feeling like this is the day for showering him with praise.

Almost cost the team the game when they are in position to go up by 2 scores. That game was pretty close to a must win game and careless play could have cost the team the game.

I dont mind a player getting beat by another player - But that play was so unecessary.

Also the first INT off a tipped pass he should have caught. He made some good plays and he blew several plays. But this team is not really a team talented enough to give gifts to their opponenet.

So, My post is more in response to his wanting to be "The Man" as evidenced by several statements he has made this year and that sideline outburst he had. Then when he gets what he asked for he had some difficulty handling it. So lets look at that and not just ignore it because they won the game.

The whole team is gameplanning around how to get him the ball more. That means everyone is willing to make adjustments for one guy - so if you want to be that guy then you cant have a few whoopsies in a big game.

Consider that the play design and the formations have been adjusted to suit "getting the ball to Dez", consider that more throws to Dez means others are losing opportunities and are willing to be unsellfish to give the better skill player some of their opportunities. There is a huge responsibility that comes with that.

Dez is a young, improving player and quite a physical talent - if he can just play with a little more focus and awareness i think he should have those opportunities at the expense of others, I do.....but at the same time he cant do careless things like losing yardage when you are at the first down already and then put yourself in a position where you are getting corraled by several defenders and then not pay attention to protecting the ball because you still think you are going to break a big run after the catch even though the defense is all over you.

So if anyone wants to evaluate his game - be fair. The number of catches and yards that he had were good, the INT and the Fumble Bad. The problem I have is that both Bad plays came as a result of carelesness or poor concentration. If you give a guy a pass for those types of miscues because he has greatness in him then he'll never really acheive that greatness because he'll continue to "blow it" with the game on the line because his head is not in the game.

I just want him to get beyond that.

I only caught and agree with the piece I quoted. Yes. DEZ would like to be the man. It would benefit the staff and the team to ensure his touches are plentiful. He is, far and above, the best WR to wear the uniform in several years. Get him some consistent touches. Create a game plan that springs him open regularly. Other teams do it. Why can't we? Work some bunch formations and pick him into open space. Once again, many other very successful teams do it with regularity today. Why can't we?

Sure.. I was just as pissed off at the next guy at his multiple blunders yesterday. Fortunately for my psyche, I prefer to evaluate his breadth of work without holding him over the coals for every mistake while also understanding what you said earlier. He is a "young improving player". I would also add intense, hungry, and passionate to the list of adjectives. That passion is rubbing off on others and, dare I say, exhibiting some early signs of leadership.

To add.. I saw some encouraging signs yesterday. For the first time all season, they lined Dez up in the slot. I want to see more maturation of the efforts to get him open. That is the key to maintaining a vibrant successful offense. If you can't consistency beat double teams to spring your best WR open, you aren't going to be moving many balls.

Broadus did a nice write up from game film study of the final game winning drive detailing the formations and how players lined up and/or shifted to do this. Its on dallascowboys.com -

I'll add if I may "the man" had a similar play happen to him and it did cost his team the game. So it can happen to anyone . Dez more than made up for his mistakes. That back shoulder fade catch on third down was not an easy one.

I was not loving dez tonight. Glad for the win. But if you want the ball more then u need to catch it in clutch situations and not be responsible for 2 turnovers. Well the fumble was not a turnover because it went out of bounds. Just a 40 yard loss that takes you out of fg range and allows the opponent an easy td.

Those 2 catches he had on the final drive on 3 downs were clutch

That was a beautiful back shoulder pass and an even better adjustment by Dez.
