How would you grade this pick
Yea he's never going to cover anybody lolA-, after watching him more closely.
I like him as a downhill thumper. His closing speed is pretty impressive, once he sees the ball carrier he gets there very quickly.
His coverage worries me, but as a downhill thumper with blitzing capability? I like that fit a lot. He plays with a lot of violence and aggression.
With Downs behind him making sure everyone on defense is set, he could be very solid.
can't say i disagree, but i feel like playing between q and downs is going to cover quite a few wartsNot really a fan, especially when I heard that Dallas wants to use him as a traditional off-ball LB.
As a project DE, I get it. Barnes is explosive, he's strong for 240 lbs, he's got really impressive change of direction, he plays with a violent mentality, and he had some production after shifting to the edge at Michigan. He's better than a "raw" pass rusher, he's already kinda half-cooked, and the bet would be that you can take him to medium rare with a redshirt season. I could get behind that for a 3rd round pick.
As a true LB though... not sold. Why did Michigan move him onto the LOS anyway? Sometimes talent just wins out, a la Parsons, but most of the time it's a panic move for an athletic LB that isn't cutting it. I didn't like the handful of snaps I saw of him at LB. He is fast and physical, but I don't think he sees the game quickly.
Basically, I'll draft a Rudy over a workout warrior any day at LB. The opposite is true at DE.
Good post, when you combine his game film at Michigan and Maryland, with his media interviews after being drafted, you see a player that plays hard. You also see how important football is to him; Barham's hustle and effort will be contagious to the front 7 players, as well as the whole defense. Caleb Downs was my favorite pick in this draft class of course, followed closely by Barham, I knew nothing about Barham until Dallas drafted him. This is exactly the type of player that will help change the culture of this team, to a hard-nosed try hard unit, he is a team altering football player.I don't really know what he is in the NFL, but I do like him, especially at 92.
His value will be his ability to move all over the place but all he really does is play downhill, so not sure how much that matters.
Really good cut up of Barham. Excited to see this kid given a shot at ILB. In the video, don’t get caught up with him playing EDGE or LB. Rather, just watch the physicality he plays with especially taking on blocks. We haven’t hade that in eons.
Without exaggeration, if Barham develops, he could be transformative for the front 7.
They can play him at middle linebacker and edge and blitz him from the linebacker position. You are going to see blitzes from Barham, Overshown, Winters, and Downs. What gets me is in that whole highlight reel (which is no question impressive), there's only one play where Barham drops into coverage, at 1:12.
Barham is great at attacking downhill, but if he's going to be an off-ball LB like CP is saying, he'll be dropping back probably 50% of the time. If I was the coach, I would keep him at edge and send him downhill 100% of the time.
Yes sir, where the blitz is coming from should be a little harder to predict now. They can play him at middle linebacker and edge and blitz him from the linebacker position. You are going to see blitzes from Barham, Overshown, Winters, and Downs.
They can blitz from different places and drop others into coverage.Yes sir, where the blitz is coming from should be a little harder to predict now.
