Falcons cut DT Jackson in surprise move

ATLANTA (AP) -- In a surprising move announced without comment from coach Bobby Petrino or general manager Rich McKay, the Atlanta Falcons cut starting defensive tackle Grady Jackson on Tuesday.

Falcons spokesman Reggie Roberts said Petrino would address the move on Wednesday.

Jackson, a 6-foot-2, 350-pound run-stopper, led the league with 13 tackles for a loss last season. The 11-year veteran had 21 tackles, including 51/2 for losses, and one sack this year.

Jackson has started 22 of the last 23 games. His surprise exit leaves rookie sixth-round pick Trey Lewis as the starter.

Jackson filed a lawsuit against the team in the offseason, claiming defamation and invasion of privacy caused by the release of his medical records. Jackson claimed the release of the report that he failed a physical last summer hurt his value as a free agent.

The two sides settled before training camp.

Lewis has 15 tackles. He made two starts when Rod Coleman and Jonathan Babineaux were held out because of knee injuries.

The Falcons (1-6) are off this week before a Nov. 4 home game against San Francisco.

Wow. Something must be up with this guy. Really odd they would cut him like that and just after the trade deadline as well.

Yea, I like Tank, however this guy has the size everyone says is important in the 3-4 scheme.

Agreed, he has the size and ability. How can we NOT sign him? He is in game shape and could be ready to go. Tank will take a few weeks to transition into the fold...

Could Tank not maybe move to the outside in place of maybe Canty or Spears? I mean, I have to say Jackson is a GEM.

I think the Falcons cutting jackson has to do with the lawsuit. Even if we just keep him 'til season's end. Rotating him and Tank will keep both fresh for the stretch run...and T is where we do lack depth. Ratliff has stepped up, but after him...Remi and ??? really haven't. I'd rather take a shot at Grady Jackson and maybe see how he/tank/fergie work out next season.

I dunno, i'm rambling, this is a bit exciting. But then again, Who won't be vying for Grady Jackson?

Wow this is a very surprising move by Falcons. Teams just don't release a starter, an effective starter especially, without a good reason, it doesn't appears that his backup is an upgrade. Since he isn't the problem on the field, I have to wonder if he is a problem child in the locker room.

He's aging and a reason he was cut.

Lets get tank in here and ready to play!

Perhaps but since that lawsuit was settled before the training camp I would think it is a non-issue, but who knows.

What's Ferguson's contract status? If Tank plays well for the remainder of the season, is there a chance he doesn't come back?

Does he have to clear waivers?

what team couldn't use some of what this guy brings to the table?

He's been in the league long enough that he doesn't have to clear waivers. He can be signed by any team he wants to go to.

I believe he would be good depth but really, right now, I believe we have enough depth as it is. But it won't hurt to get big Grady in here to see how he fits in the 3-4....

The guy is 34.

We have to cut someone when Tank is ready. Who would we cut for Jackson?

Well,

How 'bout Oglesby or Bowen, or even Austin? Having a huge NT to plug up the middle is a great weapon to have when we play the giants and skins. Did you see how the Vikings wide-bodies controlled the LOS against us? I'm just saying that this is a guy who has proven he can get the job done in the middle and you can never have enough good defensive linemen.

I remembering hearing something somewhere, that Petrino is Coughlin-esque and wants to get rid of players that won't toe his line. Whether this is the reason I don't know but I remember one of the pregame show mention it about month or so ago. He wants to get rid of the "lazy" and the Mora loyal players.
