Saints' kicker Mare out; former Cowboy Martin Gramatica has a job again

METAIRIE, La. – The New Orleans Saints signed kicker Martin Gramatica on Wednesday and placed Olindo Mare on injured reserve.

Mare hurt his hip making a tackle late in the Saints' 34-14 triumph over Atlanta on Monday night. The injury was serious enough to keep him out for the rest of the season, coach Sean Payton said.

Gramatica hasn't played since last season, when he was with the Dallas Cowboys for five games. He also played in three games with Indianapolis earlier in 2006.

He made seven of nine field goal attempts last season, his longest from 48 yards.

I really liked him. But Folk seems to be golden.

2 game winning field goals in one game (had to repeat). Im sold. Where do i sign for Folk. He's young still, so we can only expect him to get better.

We did. We also gave him an injury settlement and released him. He has been healthy for some time and waiting for someone to pick him up. Grammatica did a good job for us and the battle with Folk was close. My understanding was, the difference ended up that Folk could kick off deeper than Grammatica.

Mare has always had a strong leg but he has been pretty inconsistent kicking FG's. My guess is that Grammatica is a much more accurate FG kicker right now and Payton is looking for every edge he can find.

Good move by the Saints they picked up a good kicker in Gramatica. I'm glad to see him get this oppertunity. He did well for Dallas and I have no ill feeling towards him.

Grammy getting injured ended the contest between the two kickers. It was close and both were doing well with Folk getting the slight edge because of deeper kick offs.

I'm really suprised the foreskins didn't grab him. Don't they usually pickup our left overs?
