“His fascination was that Ali was able to talk trash and be the best at what he did but never cross that line,” Sherman’s father, Kevin, said. “At the end of his career, everybody was still talking about him. What more can you ask for?”

I have said that to everyone that hated on him. "oh, so you hated on Ali too huh? oh wait..you didnt? thought so"

I am surprised how much flack he caught for what he said. I would have thought people would applaud it....people are always complaining how chummy these guys are now compared to pre-free agency.

Ali was not a part of a team.

Plus he was not up and in your face screaming like some homeless guy with a mental issue.

Comparing Sherman's tirad with Ali is, .. is, .. not even close.

That was great play by Sherman near the end of that 49ers game.

But the tip did not end the game, the interception off of the tip did.
San Francisco still had another play after the tip if not for that interception.

Just saying, becasue the press seems to ignore that.

Or what if SF had another receiver in the area instead of the Seattle player?

Could have been a SF TD.

He studied cocksure athletes like Deion Sanders and Michael Irvin and Muhammad Ali, some of the sporting world’s best entertainers. He noticed their mannerisms, how they oozed confidence and charisma and passion, and resolved to create a similar persona for himself. He did. He became the avatar of the modern showboating athlete.
THIS is the problem with Sherman. He's just a persona or an embodiment of those guys, he's not particularly unique. He's not loud with the raw emotion and passion of Michael nor as honest as Deion. And I certainly don't think he has the...political...fuel that Ali had.

To me, he's motivated to be perceived as the best, as much as anything. That might make him a great player, sure, but it also feeds the loudmouth fabricated stuff.

I will give you the team aspect, sure.

But you need to go watch some of Ali's old weigh-in's and such. Dude was a straight loud mouth. You should go review him taunting the other person in the ring repeatedly.

Now...are the identical? no. But that basis is smack talk. And there is nothing like someone who can back up their smack talk.

Would it have been better if instead of being a loud-mouth he had done something like waited on Crabtree in the parking lot after the game?

I'm surprised by people that really have problems with what he said...what was the harshest language he used, "sorry"?

I would actually respect him more if he did. People were a lot more respectful to each other when the consequences for running your mouth to somebody was a broken nose.

It has nothing to do with the language, specifically.

Its the fact that he completely craves the spotlight, and essentially, asks for it. I don't think it has much to do with Crabtree at all, to be honest.

So much attention for a tipped pass. If not for a teammate being there, no one talks about this play and there's a good chance the 49ers score on the following plays.

If he didn't jump prematurely and twist awkwardly, it would have looked like an average play.
