Several bands I could nominate for this, haven't seen them mentioned yet but I gotta go with Van Halen. Their first 2 albums came out in 78-79 and they toiled in clubs for 5 years before their 1st album.
Great video with rare footage of EVH playing his "Shark" guitar which was a Ibanez Destroyer which as you can see, he cut a chunk out the body which altered the sound for the worse.

I'm calling The Eagles a rock & roll band and calling them the best American band of the 70's.

Hmm. No. LOL!

I really like Aerosmith. But The Eagles had 4 #1 hits in the 70's plus several other top 40 hits.

Aerosmith had two top 10 hits, a number 6 & a number 10.

For just the 70's I'm taking The Eagles.
Which I might consider, if they weren't more hard country than rock. They really didn't get anywhere near rock before Joe Walsh joined, but even then.... meh. (Just my opinion, of course)

See I don't get "country" at all with them.

Nor do I think "rock" means yelling and guitar smashing... Or maybe it does! LOL!

I love the Eagles, but I'd put them more in a category with the likes of James Taylor (whom I also love) or Jim Croce. Almost folk rock, which is about as "rock" as soft rock.

But they're still a "rock" band.

As their description begins on Wiki... The Eagles are an American rock band formed in Los Angeles in 1971.

Rock just isn't hard rock.
