Why is there a green dot on the top-back of all of the quarterbacks' helmets this preseason?

To indicate that it contains a reciever. Only one comm helmet is allowed on the field at a time now. I think the nfl is cracking down on the rules, even if you have a gadget two qb play, the second qb must be wearing a regular, non connected helmet.

Because only 1 player can have the communication equipment in his helmet.

Does anyone know if the dot indicates whether the equipment is working or not?

Yes. Green means its working.

It turns burgundy and gold if its not working. Like Magic.

I thought it changed color when there was any contact to the QB, so that the ref could throw a flag? :/

One is put for every bad throw the QB makes. Jason Campbell is said to have about 50 green dots on his helmet.

They should let Henry wear it so the coach can tell him when to turn his head and look for the ball.

It's used in mocap for the new Madden game which will provide lifelike animation for the different QBs. For Romo it will show how his head moves when he progresses through his reads, for Vince Young it will show his head move as he picks which hole to run through immediately after the snap and for Jason Campbell it will show whiplash after he gets sacked by Ware or yanked for Brunell.

The other night I wondered aloud what the green dots on QB's helmets were for. My wife, who knows next to nothing about football, said maybe it was because of the audio equipment inside the helmet. I honestly had not thought of that. Of course, I didn't tell her, but I was impressed.
