Peppers made an incredible play. He did his job like all defensive players are paid to do but Murray aided Peppers by not protecting the ball better. Any player carrying the ball--and especially running backs--must secure the ball while running in the open field. Players must be doubly cautious running the ball anywhere close to the line of scrimmage, where there are too many hands, arms, feet, helmets, etc., that can even
accidentally jar the ball loose from the player's grip.
These are reasons why running backs receive the most coaching about protecting the football throughout their time playing the game. It's about ball security.
