I would welcome Greg Ellis shutting the hell up and actually proving he was worth that #8 pick which he sure isn't.

Ellis says he would welcome a trade
By MAC ENGEL
Star-Telegram Staff Writer

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS/TONY GUTIERREZ
Cowboys defensive end Greg Ellis believes if he's not traded, 2006 will be his last season in a Dallas uniform. At first Greg Ellis wanted his contract restructured; now he says he would like to be traded.

"I think if they could get what they are looking for, it is a possibility," the Cowboys defensive end said. "I've heard rumors."

At this stage, that is all they are. Rumors. Ellis said he has heard no such talk from Cowboys owner/general manager Jerry Jones or coach Bill Parcells.

But Ellis' agent, James D. Williams, said his conversations with the Cowboys lead him to believe his client will be with the team when training camp begins July 27. And he doesn't see a change in the contract coming, either.

"It doesn't look like [a trade] is going to be feasible," said Williams, who said Ellis has not attended the Cowboys' voluntary workouts Monday or Tuesday. "It's a dead end. We're just looking forward to training camp."

Jones was not available for comment.

Ellis said he will not hold out from training camp, and that he plans to fulfill his contract. But he also thinks that, barring unseen big production this season, this year will be his last with the Cowboys. He said he was surprised when the team picked up his $500,000 roster bonus earlier this spring.

Ellis understands the Cowboys' position, and bears no grudges against the team or Parcells. He said he is closer to the coach than ever before, but it doesn't change the situation.

Ellis fears what happened to him in 2005 will happen again -- that the Cowboys say his role will be crucial, and then it decreases.

When he and Parcells spoke over the weekend, Parcells likened the situation to basketball. Everybody has a role.

"In that sport, you don't have to worry about being released," Ellis said. "Role players [in the NBA] have the confidence that they are under contract. Football isn't guaranteed....From their standpoint, they aren't saying, 'Greg, you aren't a good player.' I just want to be in a system that fits me."

It is up to Greg. What ever happens this needs to be resolved before training camp.

Alexander thinks he should keep on talking. Alexander likes the way he keeps proving Alexander's point each and every time he opens his mouth.:)

Your mantar has been that he is just greedy and wants more money.

Mine has been that he has been trying to force Dallas hand to get rid of him since the beginning.

Which one is being proved correct here?

They do when there are benched for no specific reason.

So you don't Parcells stated answer that Canty is a bigger guy who's better against the run and we were playing a lot of run heavy teams late in the year? In 2003 Canty had 103 tackles as a DE at Virginia. Let that figure roll around in your mind a little before concluding Parcells is making random decisions.

Why do folks believe the team would just sit Ellis for no reason?

Ellis said all along that he wasn't a 3-4 DE -- then when BP acknowledges this and gives away he snaps in the base D, he doesn't like it.

What I saw last year was a guy who didn't get the start in several games -- but still got all the snaps in the prime pass rush situations. And he pouted.

He may have been a bigger, but better against the run is debateable last year. Especially since Greg graded out as our best DL last year and made more tackles than Canty. Again, no disrespect to Canty, I really like the player...But our run defense suffered at the end of last year.

Your right, what Canty did in 2003 at a college level doesn't affect my decision on what happened in December of last year.

Don't you think the more tackles thing is a little overblown?

Who's going to make more tackles? A guy playing in a four man front, or a rotational guy in a 3 man front, who didn't play much early?

Getting Dallas to trade or release him so he can go where he wants and get more money isn't furthering his fiscal wishes? It's about money, one way or the other, regardless of who is signing his check.

Do you think he would garner more money, or be more valuable, on another teams that plays a 4-3 ?

I think you make too much of Ellis grading out as our top lineman. Gregg is an 8 year vet with 120+ games under his belt. From day 1 he has played an outstanding (and this is the 1 area where he is outstanding) technical game. Gregg should easily grade out better than rookies like Canty and Spears.

The question is a) how much better did he grade out and b) whether the difference between his grade and Canty's is so different that you want to sacrifice Canty's development for better play.

My guess is that later in the season, Canty and Ellis started to grade out similarly and that is why Canty more PT. To me, that's a smart move as Canty has more upside for our current D.

As noted in other posts (by others) it is hard to determine whether Ellis' reduced PT hurt the run D or not. Lots of other stuff happened after the Denver game. We faced some better run teams, our LB crew was on fumes, and Henry wasn't healthy. Lots of reasons why the run D might have sucked that don't have to do with Canty.

That depends on what team and how badly they needed a defensive end. He would get more from some teams than he is getting now, but his value across the league is not universal and that's because he wouldn't be the best end on quite a few teams.

Well He's obviously not buying what Parcells has to say...So Trade him for the best Possible Deal.

If life can go on after Aikman, Irvin and Smith...It will after Ellis.

Lets Trade him to the Raiders for Moss!:D

You beat me to it, at least that would make up for the draft mistake ;)
