Lose free agents that imo only we're going to hold us back.

With the improvements he helped provide in our vets and the rapid development of Brown he showed he's a real bright spot in our coaching staff.

Carr and Church reached their potential. Mo and JJ may have too. I believe Greg Jackson played a major role in that and the organization has confidence in his ability to do it with a new group that possibly(probably) has a much higher ceiling.

Teams like the Patriots don't always draft studs. They develop them with excellent coaching. They excel at coaching specific skills that make better football players. Hopefully we're moving in that direction.

Seems far fetched considering Eberflus is the coverage coordinator and Maxie is the secondary coach.

Their contracts ran out and we didn't want to pay them market value.

Haha, yeah. I do think Jackson did pretty well this year.

He has the Harbaugh stamp of approval, which raises his worth in my view a bit.

No doubt. Church and Wilcox had their best seasons as pros and cashed in on contract years. Heath and Jones progressed as well.

I'm just hoping that with Jones finally settled in on a position he can finally ascend.

I think Jones was a catalyst for the improvement in the secondary, even it seems vouge to trash him here. His range at the FS spot had a domino effect on the secondary. The SS's could play more down hill and much more aggressively and the CB's weren't as tentative and unsure as they were in the past

Yeah I like Jones. When I read from his college coaches he handed the playbook back to them after a few weeks and said he already knew the plays was a good tidbit.

Playing FS is hard in this league. Dominant FS are probably more rare than pass rushers. When you're playing in a mediocre secondary as a young player and the pass rush is anemic, it's only logical to assume ups and downs. I think he's going to be fine, maybe even "very good" if we can bolster the talent around him.

As far as Jackson you made a good point. and what about Heath? He should have had two picks on Rodger's in that playoff game. Much better positioning.

I'm excited to see young guys brought in to run the zone scheme. Carr and Mo were just bad fits, but Mo had his best year, when he was available, and Brown looked great for a 6th rounder. Eberflus and Maxie got those guys up to speed, so I'm pretty pumped about bringing in some young talent in this crazy deep draft at CB and possibly S that are better suited to run a primarily zone scheme.

Off topic, if Eberflus does well this year, I think he's probably going to be our DC eventually

What ever the cause the defensive backfield had a improvement last year until the playoffs.
Jackson certainly got Brown ready early last year. I hope he can do the same with this years rookies.

Why would we want to elevate Eberflus over Marinelli?
I dont think we can keep Eberflus forever though his a excellent coach.

Agree, we do need another great safety to run that system though. Zone CBs are cheap, eyes are on the ball instead of the WRs, but with great QBs we will get picked apart. Can't have cheap safeties to do that, maybe why they are gone.

If we are really going to run zone, no reason to go CB in round 1.

They're gone really, because we saw no reason to keep them. They were mediocre players that were still holdovers.

It doesn't matter if you're running man, or zone, you're always going to mix it up and good CB's are needed in every scheme. Seattle runs a cover 3 a lot, and they didn't use a high pick on a CB, but Sherman would be a 1st rounder in a do-over, when Marinelli was in Chicago running primarily a cover 2 and he had Tillman, who might be the most underrated CB ever. He'd man up Tillman on CJ and then run zone on the other half of the field.

I do know what you mean, but that's really more for the #2 corner and down. With the NFL producing these freaky WR's, you really need to have a legit #1. The #2 guy in a zone would be a lot easier to find than a #2 in a primarily man scheme, yeah.

The SS is just a strange position nowadays, especially when I'm not really sure if we want to run purely single high with Jones or mix it up. I think the SS position is probably one of the easier to fill, but ideally you want as many guys as you can get that actually cover on D. Having a quality SS helps in every aspect since they're usually on a run/pass read. Angles become more important, which is why JJ was so frustrating, you look at the All 22 or just read his line and you have no idea what he was thinking.

I actually think Heath would be an upgrade this year, but the draft is so deep at SS i'd be disappointed if we didn't come away with one.

Yeah we are on the same thought process. Unless somone falls, like Peppers I guess or that dude from UConn, its always BPA to me. With a deep DB class, especially at CB, not in a rush to get one early.
